New York Sports Betting Timeline
2022: Online sports betting officially launched in New York on January 8, with BetRivers, Caesars, DraftKings, and FanDuel being the first to go live.
2021: In January, former Governor Andrew Cuomo announced plans to legalize online sports betting. A few months later, state legislators passed a state budget bill to jumpstart the launch of mobile sports betting in the state and eventually pick nine operators from a field of applicants.
2020: Efforts to legalize online sports betting were stalled by the COVID-19 pandemic as more pressing issues took priority, pushing back the sports betting conversation to 2021. Eventually, Governor Cuomo stated that sports betting was a potential option in making up for their projected $15B budget shortfall.
2019: In-person sports betting became available, as The Rivers Casino in Schenectady became the first retail sportsbook to start taking wagers on July 16, 2019, as other sportsbooks eventually started to open.
2018: On May 14th, 2018, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned PASPA (Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act), officially ending the federal ban on sports betting in the United States.
