Yankees vs Mets Predictions

The Subway Series will begin on Tuesday night, when the New York Yankees visit the New York Mets at Citi Field in Queens. Both of these teams have failed to live up to the expectations set for them this season so far. But a win here against their crosstown rivals could kickstart a run of form that could get either of these teams back on track in the near future.

New York Yankees Predictions

The New York Yankees have alternated wins and losses over their last five games, which did not work out in their favor in their last series against the Boston Red Sox. New York dropped the first game of that series, rebounded to win the second, then dropped the third in 10 innings. Here, the Yankees will look to get back into the win column against a Mets team that has also been struggling of late.

For the Bronx Bombers, Luis Severino is set to take the mound in this contest, which has been a mixed bag so far this season. Severino has only appeared in four games so far this season for the Yankees, and has had two good starts and two bad starts. The problem going into this game is that the two bad starts were his last two starts, as he has been touched up by the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Dodgers in back-to-back outings.

Also concerning for the Yankees is the fact that Aaron Judge is still out on the IL, as it is unclear when he will return from his current toe injury. Without him, the Yankees are far less dangerous as a team from a power perspective. Whether that will come back to bite them against Max Scherzer and the Mets in this contest remains to be seen.

New York Mets Predictions

The New York Mets spent so much money and were expected to be an elite team in the National League this season. But entering Tuesday night, they are in fourth place in the NL East standings, and in danger of falling too far behind the Atlanta Braves to catch up in the second half of the season. Here, the Mets look to one of the pitchers they expected to contend for the NL Cy Young award this season to help them right the ship.

Max Scherzer is 5-2 this season, posting a 3.71 ERA during his 53.1 innings of work. Those are fine numbers, but not quite the numbers that they would have expected from a pitcher with the expectations that surrounded Scherzer going into the year. Against a diminished Yankees lineup in this game, Scherzer has a golden opportunity to bolster his numbers, but that is easier said than done.

Along with Scherzer’s pitching, it will be interesting to see how the bullpen of the Mets performs in this contest. That bullpen had a rough week last week, as they got lit up in an extra inning game against the Atlanta Braves, and were fatigued afterward against the Pittsburgh Pirates. But after some rest, they could get back to the level necessary to help the Mets secure a win in the first game of this year’s Subway Series.
