NFL investigating Colts’ cornerback for possible sports betting

The NFL is reportedly investigating another player for possible violations of the league’s gambling policy.

The league has not identified the player by name or announced any punishments, but Colts’ cornerback and kick returner Isaiah Rodgers identified himself in a social media statement on Monday shortly after a report naming him was published by Sports Illustrated’s Colts site.

Rodgers said he wants to take “full responsibility’ for breaking league rules.

“I know I have made mistakes and I am willing to do whatever it takes to repair the situation,” Rodgers wrote. “The last thing I ever wanted to do was to be a distraction to the Colts organization, my coaches, and my teammates. I’ve let people down that I care about.

“I made an error in judgment and I am going to work hard to make sure that those mistakes are rectified through this process. It’s an honor to play in the NFL and I have never taken that lightly. I am very sorry for all of this. "

Rodgers, a sixth-round pick in the 2020 NFL draft, is entering the final year of a four-year, $3.4 million contract. He has three interceptions since entering the league from UMass and figured to be in the starting mix this season.

The investigation began after a sportsbook account was opened under the name of an associate of Rodgers,

Approximately 100 bets, mostly in the $25-$50 range, were placed on the account over an undisclosed amount of time, including on Colts games, ESPN reported, and there was at least one low four-figure bet.

Rodgers is the latest NFL player in hot water for alleged sports gambling. The NFL suspended five players for gambling policy violations in April.

Lions receiver Quintez Cephus and safety C.J. Moore, as well as Washington Commanders defensive end Shaka Toney, were suspended indefinitely for betting on NFL games.

Lions’ receivers Jameson Williams and Stanley Berryhill received six-game suspensions for betting on non-NFL games from an NFL facility.

The Lions have taken steps to educate their players about sports betting, but those suspensions followed the suspension of then-Atlanta Falcons receiver Calvin Ridley for the entirety of the 2022 season after he was found to be betting on NFL games.

NFL players are prohibited from betting on NFL games and from sports betting in general while they are at team facilities.
