NFL votes to allow sportsbooks to operate in stadiums on game days

NFL fans will now get to interact with sportsbooks in stadiums on game days after league brass voted on the matter at this week’s NFL owners meetings in Scottsdale, Arizona, per The Athletic.

The piece of NFL legislation came before owners as some league stadiums have sportsbooks located in and around where their teams play on Sundays.

“The Washington Commanders are the only the team with a brick-and-mortar sportsbook in their stadium, though the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants and Jets have ones outside their venues,” reports The Athletic’s Daniel Kaplan.

The move represents a historic shift among the tenor of how the NFL interacts with sports gambling.

Kaplan reported that revenue will not be shared with other NFL teams until a certain threshold, believed to be around $20 million. After that, the money would be “pooled with the other 31 clubs for any money that exceeds that bar.”

In the United States, Kaplan reported that 33 states and the Washington D.C. area allow sports betting. Only teams in those states will be allowed to operate sportsbooks at any time.
