NHL Stanley Cup Info

When Does the Stanley Cup Take Place?

The 2023 Finals begin on June 7 and will end on June 18 at the latest.

Where Will the Finals be Staged?

As always, the games will be held equally at the home stadiums of the competing teams.

Who Won Last Year?

The Colorado Avalanche won the 2022 NHL finals.

How Many Games Do the Finals Consist of?

The finals is a best of 7 series but can consist of as little as four games depending on how the series takes shape.

Brief Recap of the 2022 NHL Finals

The 2022 Finals was contested between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Avalanche.

The Lightning reached the Stanley Cup for the third year on the spin and had won both previous Stanley Cups in 2020 and 2021. Their appearance was the fifth in their history, and they came into the Finals as the second favorites.

The Colorado Avalanche, on the other hand, were appearing in the Finals for the first time since 2001, when they beat the New Jersey Devils. They started the Finals as the favorites at all the best sportsbooks.

Game one went into overtime, with the Avalanche edging a 3-4 victory. Game two was a whitewash, with Avalanche extending their Finals lead to 2-0 on the back of a stunning 7-0 victory.

However, it wasn’t all one way, with Avalanche’s keeper Darcy Kuemper facing 16 shots.

The Lightning needed to come up with a recovery job and got off on the right foot in Game three, which they won 6-2. The Avalanche restored their two-game advantage immediately in Game four with a 3-2 overtime victory.

The Colorado Avalanche were looking to seal the Stanley Cup finals in Colorado in Game five, but the Lightning dug in and managed to escape with a 3-2 win in a very even contest.

Back home in Tampa, however, the Lightning threw away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to the Avalanche, who clinched the trophy.

The Conn Smythe Trophy for the most valuable player (MVP) in the playoffs went to Cale Makar, who was also awarded the Norris Trophy.

Keys to the Game

The Boston Bruins entered November with a 9-1 record, which saw them emerge as the second favorites to win the Stanley Cup.

Their odds shortened even more at the start of December, although the Avalanche were still the (+475) favorites.

As we move through January, the Bruins have overtaken last year's winners, the Colorado Avalanche, and are firmly in the driving seat as the (+600) favorites at most sportsbooks. They have a 28-4-4 record, which is the best in the NHL at the time of writing.

However, there’s still time to go, and several teams are in the mix. The likes of the Avalanche (+700), the Carolina Hurricanes (+900), and the Vegas Golden Knights (+1000) are not only available at good prices, but they’re also in with a great chance of reaching the Finals - and going onto win the Finals.

Last year's runner-ups, Tampa Bay, are priced as outsiders at (+1400).

We’re not surprised that the Bruins are now the undeniable favorites to win the Stanley Cup. Although the Finals are still some way off, the Bruins enjoyed a remarkable first half of the 2022/23 season and have continued their sterling form into 2023.

Therefore, the Bruins seem unstoppable now, and their (+425) may shorten even more soon.

The Colorado Avalanche will take some stopping themselves, however. They’ll want to repeat what eight other NHL teams have done by winning back-to-back Stanley Cups. The Tampa Bay Lightning did it recently, beating the Avalanche in last year’s Finals.

At this point, though, even though the Bruins are the favorites and the form team, it is anyone’s and everyone’s. Considering everyone is available at good odds, a smart idea is to go with your instinct and back a team you really fancy.

NHL Betting Odds: Best Bets

Outright Winner

We’re only in January, which means betting on the outright winner for the Stanley Cup is a little bit tricky - but it also means that the odds are probably the best they’re gonna get for the eventual winner.

Even the favorites, the Boston Bruins, are available at the best price of (+425) at sportsbooks like Bodog. However, we recommend you shop around other best gambling sites in Canada like Bovada to see if you can lock in an even better price.

The Colorado Avalanche are the (+700) second favorites but still need to work hard to secure a playoff place, their season hardly helped by a big injury list.

Betting on the outright winner is the simplest bet you can place on the Stanley Cup because the team you back just needs to win the Finals - nothing else needs to happen.

Division Winners

As well as betting on who you think will win the Stanley Cup, you can also bet on who will win each Division.

Just like betting on the Finals winners, betting on a Division winner means your team just needs to win the Division for you to win your bet.

Let’s break this down a bit more:

Metropolitan Division

This is pretty much a straight-up duel between the Carolina Hurricanes, who are currently top of the Metropolitan Division, and the New Jersey Devils, who are hunting them down in second place.

The Devils are in awesome form right now and have a 7-1-1 record over their last nine games as we write this.

The Hurricanes remain the huge (-160) favorites, but we recommend keeping an eye on the Devils at (+220), the only team that can catch them.

Atlantic Division

The Boston Bruins are a shoo-in for the Atlantic Division and are priced at (-2000). It’s, therefore, not worth taking them at this point.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are priced at (+1200) to top the Atlantic Division, but we suggest swerving this one. After all, the Bruins are not only top of their Division at the moment - they’re also top of the League.

Central Division

The race for the Central Division is the most interesting one right now for both NHL fans and NHL bettors. It’s currently a tie between the Dallas Stars and Winnipeg Jets at the top of the table, with the Stars edging it because of their superior goal differential.

The Stars, though, have an injury to Roope Hintz to contend with - and this could let the Jets in via the backdoor. You can bet on the Stars at (-110) and the Jets at (+225).

If you still think the Minnesota Wild can catch both teams, they’re available at (+650).

Pacific Division

If you’d have bet on the Vegas Golden Knights a couple of years ago when they were still new, you’d have got them at a great price. Today, they’re no longer new - and they can no longer catch the bookies by surprise.

The Golden Knights are currently top of the Pacific Division, and you can catch them at (+180) to still be topping it by the end of the regular season.

We like the look of them - but we also like the look of the even newer Seattle Kraken to catch them up and overtake them at (+210).

Conference Winners

As well as betting on who you think will win the NHL Finals and who you think will win each Division, you can also bet on the Conference winners.

Betting on the Conference winners gives you better odds because the field is larger. For example, the Boston Bruins are available at the super short price of (-2000) to win their Division - but they’re priced at the much more appealing (+225) to win the Eastern Conference.

The Toronto Maple Leafs are the (+500) second favorites for the Eastern Conference, while the Hurricanes are pegged at (+500).

In terms of the Western Conference, things are even tighter. Bookies like BetOnline have currently got the Avalanche as the (+350) favorites, the Golden Knights as the (+400) second favorites, and the Dallas Stars as the (+550) third favorites.

As with the eventual winners of the Stanley Cup, it could be anyone's.

NHL Hart Memorial Trophy Odds

The NHL Hart Memorial Trophy is awarded to the player deemed the NHL MVP of the year. In other words, the most valuable player for their team throughout the 2022/23 season. It’s named after Dr. David Hart and was won a record eight times by Wayne Gretzky throughout the seventies and eighties.

For the 2022/23 season, sports betting sites in Canada have installed Connor McDavid as the big (-350) favorite. If you think anyone but him will win it, you’ll be sure to make big gains, with even the second favorite David Pastrnak coming in at the huge price of (+1400).

Nikkita Kucherov is priced at (+1600), while you can bet on Jack Hughes at (+2000).

NHL Odds & Betting Guide

How Can I Find the Best NHL Betting Odds?

To ensure you're always getting the best NHL betting lines, it's well worth signing up to a few different sportsbooks. Then, you can compare their odds on specific markets, such as NHL spreads and moneyline bets.

Some specialist websites offer NHL odds comparisons for you to check at a glance.

What Is the NHL Puck Line?

NHL Puck lines are the NHL alternative to the NFL goal spread. For example, if you bet on a team (-1.5) and the team wins by 2 points or more, you win your bet.

The puck line comes with better odds than the moneyline bet and is worth using whenever you think a team will win comprehensively by X number of points.

What NHL Games Can I Bet On?

There are hockey lines available for every single NHL game all season long. You can bet during the regular season, the playoffs, and the Finals.

What Types of NHL Bets Can I Place?

There is a wide range of NHL bets you can place. These include the more well-known bets, such as the moneyline, when you bet on a team just to win outright, and the puck line, which is the hockey betting Canada alternative to the point spread in the NFL.

You can also try NHL totals, a type of bet that requires you to bet on whether you think there will be over X number of total goals or under X number of total goals.

You can also create parlays and add several selections to the same bet. NHL futures are available as well.

Who Will Win the NHL Finals?

The Boston Bruins are the (+425) favorites at practically all sportsbooks to win the NHL finals. They're the form team whose odds have been continually shortening since November.

They have many high-caliber players on their team, including David Pastrnak, the second favorite to win the NHL Hart Memorial Trophy.

Last year's winners, the Colorado Avalanche (+700), must not be discounted, however, while the Vegas Golden Knights are still very much a part of the conversation.

How Do I Read NHL Betting Odds?

The simplest way to read betting lines at sports betting apps in Canada is to remember that the favorite in NHL games is usually represented by a minus sign (-), while the underdog team is represented by a plus sign.

When a game has already started, live NHL odds work similarly- the winning team will probably be represented by a minus sign, especially if they were the pre-match favorites.

What NHL Prop Bets are There?

At top-rated sportsbooks like Bodog, you can bet on various prop bets. This means you can bet on player props - such as a keeper making X number of saves or a player scoring 1.5 points - and team props, such as a team scoring under 2.5 points.

Prop bets allow you to get a bit more creative with your bets, which can often come with better odds.

How Do I Bet On an NHL Game?

Bodog and make a first deposit.

Then, you're free to check the different markets and the potential payout of any bet you might want to place.

Once you've picked a bet and are satisfied with the odds, just enter a stake and click "place bet" to place your wager.
