NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams 11/24/2023

We are now nearing the end of the second calendar month of the season, and the separation within the divisions contenders and basement dwellers are starting to take shape. Boston has yet to lose a home game in regulation, the Kings have not lost a single away game so far, and the Blue Jackets have lost nine in a row. Vancouver still showcases four players in the top 15 in the league in points, and both Bruins goaltenders rank in the top 10 in almost all major goalie categories. Now it’s time to take a look at the teams who are making us fans the most money. It has been two weeks since our last Hot/Cold article on money line and ATS so let’s see where the current cash trends are.

Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.

ATS

Hot

Philadelphia Flyers 6-0 ATS

The Flyers have flown up the Metro Division standings as they are currently on a 5-1 streak with victories over Vegas, Carolina, and Los Angeles. Over this current streak, they have a +10-goal differential and have covered all six. This Flyers team is dominating right now. G Carter Hart has been incredible for the Flyers, as he sits at 6-3, allowing just 2.40 GA/G. Philadelphia is 14-5 ATS this season, which is second best in the league behind the Canucks. Goaltending has been a big help for this current streak, but also fueling the ATS success all season. Over the last six games, the Flyers have allowed just 14 goals, which averages out to just over two a game. However, this team lacks offense, and I believe this streak will come to an end soon, especially with the upcoming schedule. The Flyers do not have a single player in the top 50 in the league in points, despite Travis Konecny’s 11 goals ranking 11th in the league. His Travis counterpart, blueliner Travis Sanheim, leads the team in points with 16, and the two together have been the, albeit little, firepower of the offense. The Flyers are surprising many and have sustained success ATS. However, with the Rangers, Hurricanes, Penguins, and Avs coming up, I believe we will see this team come back to expectations. But they are the hottest team in the NHL both ATS and outright, so it may not be a bad idea to ride the hot hand until it cools.

Winnipeg Jets – 7-1 ATS

Similarly, to the Flyers, the Jets have soared up the standings as of late thanks to their current hot streak. Winnipeg has covered seven of their last eight contests, and that is thanks to a scorching offense that has averaged 4.57 GF/G over their last seven. Winnipeg is now tied for second in the Central with the Avs, both with 24 points in 18 games. Hellebuyck has really come on in this stretch as the netminder has appeared in seven of the eight games and has allowed just 2.3 GA/G, improving on his 3.38 mark from the previous eight games. Now the offense hasn’t missed a beat lately, and Kyle Connor and Mark Scheifele have proved to be a great duo for the Jets. The two have combined for 45 points in their 18 games this season. The Jets have proved they are a contender this season despite the offseason looking like they may decline. They are now 21-6 overall ATS and are a team to ride as we progress through the winter months.

Cold

New Jersey Devils – 1-4 ATS

New Jersey is really slipping right now. They have dropped their last two and are 4-6 in their last 10 games. They have continued to be awful ATS as well. They are 4-13 ATS on the year and are now 8-8-1 overall. They have suffered some injuries, but their goaltending has not been what it was a year ago. The Devils allow nearly four goals a game, and their two netminders have a combined SV% of .886, which is good for 29th in the NHL. The Devils are especially cold of late, as they have dropped six of their last eight games and have allowed 4.13 GA/G in that stretch while averaging just 2.63 GF/G of their own. This is a good team, but their offense is ice cold and their netminding has underperformed so far.

Vegas Golden Knights – 2-4 ATS

The Knights are the second-best team in hockey, but they have been awful lately at covering the puck-line. They have failed to cover in four of their last six games and have gone just 3-5 over their last eight outings. One notable problem is their backup goalie is 0-3 in his last five starts, two of which have been in this five-game skid. The strength of this team is its goaltending. Therefore, with Thompson struggling and not relieving Adin Hill has proved to be an issue for this team. This is not a hockey team that is scoring four goals a night, so if their netminding is bad it is likely the outcome is bad as well. Vegas is just 9-11 ATS this season. It is also worth noting that Vegas has been shut out twice during this six-game stretch, the only two times that has happened this season. They have a tough stretch coming up with five of their next eight being on the road, so I expect the cold stretch to continue.

Honorable Mentions- Buffalo Sabres- 2-4 ATS and Toronto Maple Leafs- 1-3 ATS

Moneyline

Hot

Washington Capitals – 5-0

Where have the Caps come from? This team is rolling despite having a goal differential of 0. They rank 29th in the NHL in GF/G as the Caps average just 2.56 GF/G. However, their netminding has been dominant so far and has proven time and time again that it can give the offense enough to score. They have won nine of their last 11 games and have allowed four goals just one time across that stretch. However, I am a big believer in everything regressing to the mean, and I believe that this team will sputter and go back to being an average team.

Philadelphia Flyers – 5-1

Philly has won half of their season total (10) across this stretch. Take it away, and the Flyers have won only five of 13. I do not think this is a great team to ride with straight up. Can’t take away their success regarding the puck-line, but otherwise this is a very underwhelming group.

Honorable Mention- Toronto Maple Leafs – 4-0

Cold

Columbus Blue Jackets – 1-6-1

These guys are really bad. They have had a ton of noise around them with the offseason issues, and they have yet to really get it going in any capacity. They have been absolutely abysmal 2-13 over their last 15 games. They are 12-8 ATS, but that is the only positive note on this team. They are lucky the Sharks are as bad as they are, or the Jackets would be getting plenty of negative publicity.

Minnesota Wild – 0-3-2

More goaltending issues. Minnesota is allowing 4 GA/G and has a lowly .879 SV% on the year. Filip Gustavsson has been a huge letdown this season and has now given way to Marc-Andre Fleury as the starting netminder. Neither of them has done that much better than the other, and the Wild are being held back entirely by their struggles. They have lost their last five games and are a mere 2-5-3 in their last 10 contests. Minnesota should look to add a netminder at the deadline or hope the Fleury/Gustavsson duo can figure it out.

Honorable Mention- Chicago Blackhawks – 1-5
