NHL Who’s Hot, Who’s Not: Hamilton Doing the Dougie

Defensemen Dougie Hamilton of the New Jersey Devils and Erik Karlsson continue to put up impressive numbers as they find themselves on the “Who’s Hot” list once again.

It is time to reward a couple of goalies from struggling teams, with Philadelphia’s Carter Hart and John Gibson of Anaheim are giving the Flyers and Ducks a chance to win in recent action.

Future Hall of Fame goalie Marc-Andre Fleury makes a rare appearance on the “Who’s Not” list.

Boston has yet to play following the NHL All-Star Game. Still, the Bruins’ dominating first half has them priced at +500 in the odds to win the Stanley Cup title, according to the Las Vegas odds. The Bruins are at -500 to win the President’s Trophy.

There are some surprising names on the Who’s Not list this week. Keep on reading for information on the hottest forwards, defensemen, and goaltenders in the NHL, as well as those players recently struggling.

Let’s check the latest NHL news, stats, injury reports, and NHL lines. We’ve got plenty of NHL picks for you to consider.

  • Filip Chytil, New York Rangers: The rest from the All-Star break did little to slow down the surging 23-year-old Chytil.
He has three goals as the Rangers won their first two post-All-Star games. In his last five games, he has six goals and an assist. Despite missing eight games, he already has career-highs with 19 goals and 32 points.
  • Elias Pettersson, Canucks: With 30-goal scorer, Bo Horvat already traded and other Canucks rumored to be on the block, one of the players not showing up in trade rumors is Pettersson.
In his last four games, he has five goals and two assists. However, he is -1 during that time and that speaks volumes about the state of the Canucks these days.
  • Brayden Point, Lightning: Point has back-to-back multi-point games.
After scoring two of Tampa Bay’s three goals in a disappointing overtime loss to the San Jose Sharks, he had a goal and an assist as the Lightning rebounded to roll past defending Stanley Cup champion Colorado 5-0 on Thursday.
Point is on pace to score a career-high 51 goals.
  • Dougie Hamilton, Devils: Hamilton is coming off a two-goal game in a 3-1 win over a Seattle team in contention for the Pacific Division title. In the two games since play resumed, he has had a hand in five of New Jersey’s eight goals.
In his last six contests, Hamilton has five goals and eight assists to go with a +6 defensive rating.
  • Erik Karlsson, Sharks: There might not be a bigger catch in the current trade market than Karlsson.
Karlsson has either scored or assisted on four of San Jose’s five goals in the last two games. He is not only leading the Sharks with 70 points, he is on pace for 108 points. Karlsson would join Bobby Orr, Paul Coffey, Al MacInnis, Brian Leetch, and Denis Potvin as the only NHL defensemen with more than 100 points during the regular season. Leetch was the last to accomplish the feat during the 1991-92 season.
The NHL odds list Karlsson (+150) as the favorite in the odds to win the Norris Trophy.
  • Charlie McAvoy, Bruins: McAvoy is second on the NHL-leading Bruins in time on ice with an average of 22:37 per game and is a major reason why Boston has allowed the fewest goals in the NHL.
He is pretty good in the offensive zone as well with two goals and seven assists over his last nine games. McAvoy doesn’t have a negative plus/minus rating in his last 10 games.
  • John Gibson, Ducks: It has been a tough season for the veteran netminder. However, he is 2-0-1 with a 1.91 goals-against average and a save percentage of .950 in his last three starts.
He stopped 39 of 41 shots as the Ducks took the host Dallas Stars to a shootout in the first game following the All-Star break.
  • Carter Hart, Flyers: While the play in front of him has been spotty as best at times, Hart has allowed 10 goals over his last five games. He has just two wins to show for that strong play when he has posted a 1.96 goals-against average and .940 save percentage.
  • Vitek Vanecek, Devils: Yet another appearance on this list for Vanecek.
Vanecek has won his last 10 starts and has allowed two goals or less six times in those 10 games.
His 22 wins are a career high after posting 21 and 20 in his two seasons with the Washington Capitals.
  • Matty Beniers, Kraken: The front-runner to win the Calder Trophy as the rookie of the year according to the sportsbook, Beniers has no points in his last seven games. Beniers is also -7 during that stretch as Seattle is 2-4-1 and now in second place in the Pacific Division standings.
Beniers had five multi-point efforts in his previous seven games before hitting this cold spell. Welcome to life as a rookie in the NHL.
  • Christian Dvorak, Canadiens: Dvorak has no goals and no assists over his last six games.
The four-time 15-goal scorer during his time with the Arizona Coyotes has been held without a goal over his last 19 games as he has had a difficult second season in Montreal.
  • Joel Farabee, Flyers: Farabee has no goals and no assists in his last 10 games and he has finished with two shots or less in eight straight contests. He is -5 during that stretch.
His last goal came on Jan. 9 against Buffalo and the last time he scored on a team currently in a playoff position was on Dec. 22 in a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs.
  • Matt Dumba, Wild: There have been rumblings that Dumba’s time in Minnesota could be coming to an end.
Dumba has no points and no assists with a -6 defensive rating over the last six games. He has a minus number in four of those games.
  • Vladislav Gavrikov, Blue Jackets: Gavrikov has no goals and no assists over his last nine games and is -5 during that stretch.
Columbus is 2-5-2 in those games and has the fewest points in the NHL and the worst goal differential in the Eastern Conference.
  • Torey Krug, Blues: This is not Krug’s first appearance on this list.
While Krug is second only to Justin Faulk in points by a St. Louis defenseman, his -26 plus-minus number is pretty frightening.
Krug has four assists in his last four games but is -6 during that stretch, and that includes being -7 over the last three contests for the struggling Blues.
  • Marc-Andre Fleury, Wild: Fleury is 2-2 with a 3.20 goals-against average over his last four games. He is in danger of posting his worst numbers in goals-against average and save percentage since the 2005-06 season when he was with the Pittsburgh Penguins.
  • Kaapo Kahkonen, Sharks: Kahkonen has won just two of his last five starts.
Kahkonen has allowed at least four goals in four of his last seven games for the Sharks.
  • Juuse Saros, Predators: Saros has given up 11 goals in his last three games.
In the two games, since he appeared in the NHL All-Star game, Saros has surrendered seven goals on 43 shots.
