North Carolina Sports Betting: Which Online Sportsbooks Will Gain Licenses?

The state of North Carolina approved sports betting with a bill back in June 2023. What does this mean for online sports betting in the state and the top sportsbooks? Who will gain licenses and how many are available? Here’s what you need to know.

North Carolina Sports Betting Will Give Out 12 Online Licenses

The state of North Carolina will have 12 online sportsbook licenses along with eight retail sportsbook licenses. This will give the state a strong presence in both the online and retail markets for North Carolina bettors.

Also, it looks like the tax rate for online sportsbooks will be 18% which is much lower than some states like New York which has a rate of 51% and Pennsylvania’s rate is 36%.

Potential Sportsbook to Join the State

With 12 potential licenses up for grabs, we could see all of the top sportsbooks and more make a push to enter the state. Here are a few of the top sportsbooks expecting to apply for sports betting licenses and be ready for launch day. The state plans to launch in 2024 but it’s unclear what the exact date is at the moment.

  • BetMGM
  • bet365
  • BetRivers
  • Caesars
  • DraftKings
  • Fanatics
  • FanDuel

Retail Sportsbook Locations in North Carolina

The state law also allows for eight retail sportsbook locations but there is a catch on where these locations can be located. These retail sportsbooks have to be located within 1.5 miles of any of the professional sports facilities in the state. There are a total of eight in North Carolina including:

  • Bank of America Stadium
  • Charlotte Motor Speedway
  • North Wilkesboro Speedway
  • PNC Arena
  • Quail Hollow
  • Sedgefield Country Club
  • Spectrum Center
  • WakeMed Soccer Park

When Will North Carolina Sports Betting Go Live?

The state of North Carolina is shooting for a 2024 launch. Originally, there was talk of a launch in January 2024 but it has been pushed back. As of now, sports bettors in the state can expect a launch in mid-2024. The state has been working hard with the North Carolina Sports Betting Committee to get rules and regulations in place.
