NY Islanders: Pierre Engvall locks down second long-term deal of the summer

On Monday, New York Islanders' forward Pierre Engvall took to Instagram to announce his engagement to his fiance Matilda von Sicard. She said, "Yes! Yes! Yes!" The proposal took place on the beautiful Amalfi Coast in southern Italy. Not too shabby.

Marriage is not the first long-term contract that Engvall signed off on this summer. The forward signed a seven-year $21 million deal on July 1st after coming to Long Island at the 2023 trade deadline and helping the Isles secure a playoff spot in the final regular season game of the season.

This is a man not afraid to make a commitment.

Engvall was acquired by the Islanders on Feb. 28 in a trade with the Toronto Maple Leafs for a 2024 third-round pick. The forward scored five goals and four assists in 18 games with the Islanders this season and his first career playoff goal against the Carolina Hurricanes.

Presumably, the courtship with his soon-to-be wife was longer than the Islanders had to decide whether Engvall was a player they saw a bright future with on Long Island. In a short sample size, the 27-year-old impressed enough to sign him to a deal that will carry him into his mid-30s. The Isles scored an impressive 5.18 goals-per-60 with Engvall on the ice over his 18 games with the team.

Lamoriello and the Islanders are betting that the Engvall they saw click with Brock Nelson and Kyle Palmieri is just the start of things to come for a player that has long been ripe with potential but had yet to put it all together. There's a belief that his game still has plenty of room to grow and that the tall and speedy forward will flourish in an elevated role. If that happens, there's a good chance his value will surpass the $3M AAV he's locked into.

"He's had tremendous growth; you're going to find dividends in this young man," said Lamoriello after the signing. He's not the only one who thinks so.
