Scouting Arizona State

Record: 1-0

Best player: Running back Cam Skattebo was named All-Pac-12 preseason honorable mention after transferring in from Sacramento State, where he was last season’s Big Sky Offensive Player of the Year. A 5-foot-10, 225-pound junior, he led the Sun Devils with 17 carries for 71 yards and a touchdown in Thursday’s wacky 24-21 win over Southern Utah. He’s a bit of a bowling ball and will be a tough tackle for a Cowboys defense that struggled at times to bring down ballcarriers in the opener.

The case for Arizona State:It was a mixed bag for the Sun Devils in the opener under new coach Kenny Dillingham, complete with a near collapse and a dust storm (known as a haboob in Arizona for its large, dramatic wall of dust) that delayed the game for nearly three hours. Maybe a dust storm will knock the Cowboys out of whack. Or it’ll be an Arizona State team that was not particularly flashy in its opener, which leaves a lot of unknowns for an OSU team coming off a lackluster performance against an FCS team.

The case for OSU: First, the Cowboys will open the playbook a little more. For the defense, that means more blitzes and possibly more four-man front looks, which will be a wrinkle under Bryan Nardo not yet on tape for the Sun Devils. Second, the Cowboys found some confidence in their run game during the fourth quarter — along with a spark from Ollie Gordon — and still remain a dangerous offensive team with skill players like Gordon, Brennan Presley and De’Zhaun Stribling, among others.
