Match preview

Two of French football’s most in-form sides are set to lock horns in a Ligue 1 clash at the Stade Velodrome this Friday, March 31st.

The matchup in question will see Olympique Marseille act as hosts, in a meeting with Montpellier.

Beginning with the former, Marseille currently sit 2nd in the table in France’s top-flight.

This comes owing to a stretch of four wins, and just a solitary defeat - at the hands of table-topping Paris Saint-Germain - from their last six.

Most recently, in their final outing prior to the international break, Igor Tudor’s troops recovered from an early goal down to high-flying Reims, to ultimately emerge on the right side of a 2-1 scoreline.

Alexis Sanchez, meanwhile, proved the star of the show, notching twice to take his tally to three goals in his last two appearances, and 15 for the campaign.

Such efforts, coupled with PSG’s shock defeat at the hands of Rennes last time out, have seen Marseille climb back within seven points of the table-topping champions.

Adding to this run courtesy of a fifth win in seven on Friday, however, will prove no easy task for OM.

This comes with their upcoming opponents having also enjoyed an altogether fruitful time of things of late.

Montpellier, for their part, have spent the last couple of months putting some much-needed distance between themselves and the battle against relegation from Ligue 1.

All told, dating back to early February, La Paillade have racked up five wins and a draw from their last six.

This stretch includes drubbings of both Brest and Angers, as well as, most recently, a comeback victory of their own, at the expense of Clermont.

Whilst it was Alexis Sanchez who proved the hero for Marseille, youngster Elye Wahi stood tall when needed most by Montpellier, bagging a brace against Clermont to make it five goals in his last five outings.

Such excellence, of course, makes Friday’s Stade Velodrome clash an altogether difficult one to call.

Marseille, for obvious reasons, should be viewed as favourites to ultimately emerge from proceedings triumphant, but do not count out Montpellier, who will have their sights set on, at the least, a share of the spoils.
