You Need To Place An Each Way Bet
Paddy Power, like all bookmakers, only pay out on the places if you have made an EACH WAY bet.
An each-way bet is a type of wager commonly used in horse racing and other sports betting, such as golf or tennis. It involves placing two equal bets on the same selection: one bet to win and another bet to place.
The “win” bet is a straightforward bet on the selection to win the race or event outright. The “place” bet is a bet on the selection to finish in one of the predetermined places, which varies depending on the number of runners in the race and the terms set by the bookmaker.
For example, in the Grand National, because it has more than 16 runners, the place terms they pay will be 1/5 of the odds for those horses that finish 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th.
If the runner you back wins the race, both the win bet and the place bet are paid out in full.
If the horse finishes between 2nd and 6th place, the place bet is paid out at the agreed fraction of the odds (e.g. 1/5) and the win bet loses.
And if your horse finishes the race but comes in at least 7th place or more, then sadly, you get no money back from your bet.
The benefit of an each-way bet is that it increases the chances of winning something even if the selection doesn’t win the race outright.
However, because you’re placing two bets, the total cost of an each-way bet is double the unit stake.
For the 2023 Grand National, Paddy Power will pay out 1/5 odds on the horses that finish second, third, fourth, fifth, and SIXTH.
