PENN Entertainment Launches New Barstool Sportsbook and Casino App

PENN Entertainment announced today that the new Barstool Sportsbook and Casino app is live after being temporarily shut down on July 10 for the company to migrate its technology to a new in-house platform.

The migration has been completed across all 16 jurisdictions where Barstool Sportsbook operates. The work was completed during the slower sports period of the MLB All-Star break.

Barstool Sportsbook previously depended on Kambi’s platform technology since its launch in September 2020. The migration to an in-house technology platform has been in the works since PENN Entertainment acquired theScore for $2.1 billion in October 2021.

According to a PENN Entertainment representative, this is the largest scale technology migration in the North American regulated gaming industry.

CEO Snowden: “Milestone achievement”

PENN Entertainment CEO and President Jay Snowden lauded the platform migration for providing the company with “full control of our product.”

“Migrating onto our proprietary technology platform and introducing a fully upgraded Barstool Sportsbook is a milestone achievement,” Snowden said in a press release. “Having full control of our product and roadmap will lead to improved operational efficiency and the ability to quickly introduce new features, bespoke promotions and wagering markets. I want to congratulate our Interactive team members who worked tirelessly to ensure a successful on schedule migration, which better positions us to compete in the online gaming space.”

The migration will provide Barstool Sportsbook’s app with streamlined navigation, more wagering markets, including expanded player props and in-game betting, faster load times, deposits, and withdrawals.

The new operator app will also include deeper integrations with theScore media app, allowing customers to build and track bet slips with the media company.

New App Provides Platform Stability

According to the company, the platform deployment and upgrade was custom built for the North American market. The vertically integrated technology stack increases platform stability and is designed to be easily scalable.

Benjie Levy, head of Penn Interactive and President and COO, theScore, said the technology powers a “significantly enhanced Barstool Sportsbook.”

“A technology migration of this scale requires an enormous amount of coordination and planning, and I’m extremely proud of our Interactive team who stepped up to the challenge to execute this complex project on time and with minimal disruption to customers,” Levy said in the release.

“Deploying our technology infrastructure puts our experienced in-house team, who built the platform from the ground up, in full control of the end-to-end customer journey and all product development. With this proven technology powering a significantly enhanced Barstool Sportsbook, we are primed to deliver a world class online sportsbook and casino experience to customers in the U.S.”
