Pete Rose, MLB legend, meets with Nick Saban and Alabama football team

Baseball legend Pete Rose spoke to Alabama football players on Tuesday, the program's official X feed tweeted. Crimson Tide coach Nick Saban routinely brings in speakers in August as part of fall camp, and Rose's speech presumably dealt with the dangers of gambling.

Rose, Major League Baseball's all-time hits leader (4,256) was given a lifetime ban from the sport after a 1989 investigation determined that he gambled on baseball between 1985-1987, including on the Cincinnati Reds, while he was manager of the club. Gambling is becoming a bigger issue on the college sports landscape as more states legalize betting on college sports. Crimson Tide baseball coach Brad Bohannon was fired for cause in May after being linked to wagers against his own team.

"We try to get the best speakers that we possibly can that address issues that we're facing in college football as well as people who can help create a mindset that's going to help you be more consistent so that you can get the results that you want relative to the commitments that you make," Saban said last week when asked about this year's speakers. "So and I think we have a really good blend of all those types of people. You guys know what the issues are. If you look at the players that are suspended for whether it's gambling, drugs and alcohol, whatever. So those are all things that we're trying to educate our players on relative to consequences of good and bad behavior, cause and effect, because we don't want anybody to suffer negative consequences that might impact and affect their brand."

Last year, Saban arranged several noteworthy speakers, including Olympic swimming gold medalist Michael Phelps and 11-time Pro Bowl wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

The Crimson Tide completed its fifth practice of camp on Tuesday and will hold its first fall scrimmage at Bryant-Denny Stadium on Saturday.
