Peter Mata'utia announces retirement from rugby league

AFTER his departure from Warrington Wolves was confirmed, Peter Mata’utia has announced his retirement from rugby league.

The 32-year-old confirmed on Instagram that he has decided to bring his professional career to an end after more than 200 appearances for five clubs and representatively for Samoa and the Combined Nations All-Stars.

His two-season spell at The Wire is now at an end after he followed head coach Daryl Powell in moving from Castleford Tigers, with the centre making 55 appearances in primrose and blue and scoring six tries.

He also spent time with Leigh on these shores having played for Newcastle Knights and St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRL.

“With a full heart I can proudly say that I am jumping off the best roller coaster ride and retiring from the game that saved and changed my life for the better,” Mata’utia wrote on Instagram.

“I look back with gratitude and appreciation for the 16 years I was blessed with.

“Because of you guys, a little Bankstown boy who became a Novacastrian got to live his dream through all the odds, inspire others and give my kids a life that I never had as a kid.

“To all my teammates and staff members. All I wanted to be was a player that others wanted to play with and work with. I hope I lived up to that. Thank you for everything.

“To all my mentors. Thank you for watching out for me and I hope I made you guys proud.”
