PFA Player of the Year: Erling Haaland favourite ahead of Martin Odegaard in odds list despite Arsenal moving clear in title race

The PFA Player of the Year battle is hotting up as Arsenal take control in the Premier League title race.

talkSPORT BET have updated their odds for the award, with two Norwegians predictably at the top of the list, led by Manchester City’s record breaking striker Erling Haaland, who is odds on at 4/6 to win the award.

Haaland, who signed for Manchester City in the summer transfer window from Borussia Dortmund, has broken record after record and at time of writing has bagged 21 goals in 17 Premier League games this season.

Among the records the 22-year-old has broken, is most scored before the turn of the year (including a month long break for the World Cup), quickest to 20 league goals (which he reached in 14 games) and quickest player to score three hat tricks, which took eight games, 40 matches better than second place.

Haaland’s international teammate, Martin Odegaard, has also lit up the Premier League this season, captaining his Arsenal side to the top of the table, which they currently lead by eight points.

The attacking midfielder was just 23 when he was given the captain’s armband in pre-season, and has gone a long way to leading his club to what could be a first Premier League title in 19 years.

The 24-year-old has eight goals and five assists to his name this season, and is backed at 4/1 to win the PFA Player of the Year award.

Other players in with a shout are Manchester City’s Kevin De Bruyne, who has won the award in two of the last three season and is 12/1 to win his third.

Marcus Rashford has taken the league by storm since its resumption after the World Cup and is 16/1 to win the award following his influence on his Manchester United side who are currently in the midst of an unexpected title charge.

Fellow England internationals Bukayo Saka and Harry Kane are also in the running at 20/1 and 25/1 respectively.

PFA Player of the Year odds:

  • Erling Haaland – 4/6
  • Martin Odegaard – 4/1
  • Kevin De Bruyne – 12/1
  • Marcus Rashford – 16/1
  • Bukayo Saka – 20/1
  • Harry Kane – 25/1

talkSPORT BET spokesperson Ryon Scott-Douglas said of the shortlist: “Despite Arsenal’s dominance so far in the Premier League, there still seems to be some doubt as to whether they can get over the line and bring the trophy back to the Emirates.

“Backing Odegaard really comes down to whether you think Arsenal are going to top the league. There’s no doubt he’s the one pulling the strings in that Arsenal squad, but whether he has the same pedigree as KDB or Haaland is another question.

“A lot of questions as to whether Haaland is hindering City at the moment (Which I think is ridiculous) I think he’s a worthy favourite at 4/6 with the Golden Boot looking his to lose.

“However, if Manchester City have their predicted title charge in this second half of the season it’ll almost certainly be KDB who architects it, and therefore looks great value at 12/1.

“The gut says it’s Arsenals year, so I can’t help but circle back to Odegaard at 4/1 but one things for sure, the second half of the season is going to test exactly what this exciting ‘new look’ Arsenal side are made of.”
