PGA Championship 2023 betting tips: The favourites for victory in Oak Hill as Rory McIlroy battles Jon Rahm for major glory

The 2023 PGA Championship is coming up this week as golf’s best head to New York for the second major of the season.

The beautiful Oak Hill County Club will host the 105th edition of the PGA Championship and an all-star field will battle it out for glory.

Spain’s world No1 Jon Rahm claimed victory The Masters in early April, producing a superb display at Augusta to win by four shots.

He’ll be eyeing more major success this week but will have to compete against another superstar line-up.

Among the challengers is Rory McIlroy who will be looking to hit back from his recent slump and claim his first major since 2014.

The favourites to win the 2023 PGA Championship

Rahm is the hot favourite again heading into the 2023 PGA Championship and rightly so.

Following his win at the Mexico Open in May 2022, Rahm has won four more times since, culminating in his brilliant capture of a Green Jacket.

Rahm’s form has continued, finishing T15 at the RBC Heritage before just losing out to Tony Finau in Mexico a few weeks ago.

The Spaniard struggled at the PGA Championship last year and is yet to showcase his very best in the tournament.

But his US Open victory at Torrey Pines in 2021 proves he can do it around the toughest of American courses and he’ll be looking to add a third major title to his glittering CV at Oak Hill.

Scottie Scheffler 8/1

Scheffler will be out to become a two-time major winner in Rochester and is in stellar form as well.

He has finished no worse than T12 in his last 13 tournaments and has claimed wins at the Phoenix Open and The Players in that stretch.

He secured an admirable tenth in his Masters defence last month and has finished in the top eight in two of his three PGA Championships to date as well.

Scheffler was in contention at the Bryson Nelson last weekend and lamented his ‘average’ final day 65 as he finished fifth.

If he can move from ‘average’ to ‘good’, the rest of the field had better watch out!

Rory McIlroy 12/1

McIlroy has endured a pretty disastrous 2023 so far and he’ll be determined to hit back in New York.

After a good showing at the Arnold Palmer, McIlroy has missed cuts at The Players and The Masters and finished a lowly T47 at the recent Wells Fargo.

Off-field commitments have made for a heavy workload and have seemingly stolen the 34-year-old’s focus and he must respond this week.

And the 2023 PGA Championship does provide Rory with a great chance of doing just that.

McIlroy loves Oak Hill and his game should be perfectly suited to the reimagined Donald J Ross design.

The Northern Irishman also knows how to get it done at the PGA, having already claimed two titles in 2012 and 2014 respectively.

Fans around the world would love to see McIlroy end his long major drought and this week would appear to be his best opportunity for many years.

Brooks Koepka 22/1

Koepka was quite brilliant over the first three days at The Masters and will be heading up LIV Golf’s challenge at the PGA.

The confident American has two PGA Championship wins and two US Open titles to his name and always raises his game for the big occasion.

He has also been playing some fine golf on LIV and should be a contender yet again this week.

Koepka has claimed major glory at Shinnecock Hills, Bethpage Black and Erin Hills, some of the hardest courses in world golf.

He loves to test his skills against best and in the toughest conditions so don’t be surprised to see him in contention yet again come Sunday.

Xander Schauffele 22/1

As a major winner in waiting, Schauffele will be eager to join the game’s elite as soon as possible.

He has ten top-ten finishes in the majors during his career so far and performed well at Augusta last month.

But it’s now time for Schauffele to take the next step and produce his very best at the highest level when it really matters.

There have been some question marks over the Olympic champion’s ruthlessness.

He has been in the mix a lot recently, including a second and fourth in his last two outings, but has failed to pile on the pressure and really press home in pursuit of glory.

Justin Thomas 22/1

The defending champion is becoming something of a PGA Championship specialist.

He claimed glory at Southern Hills last year, beating Will Zalatoris in a playoff after Mito Pereira suffered a spectacular final hole collapse.

That was his second Wanamaker trophy following his two-stroke win at Quail Hollow in 2017.

JT hasn’t won since last May and has now slipped to 13th in the world rankings.

The Kentucky-native is lacking form but has the experience and quality to contend if he can put it altogether.
