The nightcap of opening night for the 2023-24 NBA season presents the Golden State Warriors hosting the Phoenix Suns. Both teams have title aspirations and feature players who used to suit up for the opposing team.

Chris Paul will face his former Suns squad while Kevin Durant will play in front of a Chase Center crowd for the first time since he exited the Dubs.

Suns vs. Warriors ATS Stats

Phoenix finished last season 49-42-1 overall against the spread. Also, they were 21-24-1 ATS as the away team. Overall, the Warriors were 44-50-1 against the spread last season. In addition, they were 30-16-1 ATS as the home team.

Season Series

Last season, the teams played four times with Phoenix taking three of the matches. The Suns hold the all-time record having bested the Warriors in 147 of their 259 matches

Phoenix Suns

GM James Jones had an eventful offseason starting with Frank Vogel assuming the head coach helm. Yet, the big news of the summer came via a blockbuster deal to bring Bradley Beal to Phoenix completing the Suns Big 3.

Aside from Durant and Devin Booker, almost the entire roster turned over with the most notable exits being Deandre Ayton and CP3  while the key addition was Beal. In all, there are 13 new players on the Suns roster and only four returnees (KD, Booker, Okogie, Lee).

With the triumvirate of KD, Book, and Beal scoring won’t be a problem but even with some solid upgrades defense and depth are still the biggest question marks entering the season.

Suns Stats

Phoenix posted a 4-1 record in the preseason. They finished last season registering the 14th-ranked offense, seventh-ranked defense (10th in both categories post All-Star break) with the ninth-best differential (2.2).

Health is the stat to focus on as this prolific scoring trio has battled the injury bug the past three seasons. Of the 236 possible games Booker (46), Beal (86), and KD (99) each missed significant time.

Suns Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Damion Lee SG (OUT indefinitely —knee)

Golden State Warriors

No one was buying the Warriors simply moved on from the Draymond Green – Jordan Poole altercation. Granted injuries and the young players failing to take a leap also contributed to the Dubs’ issues last season but ‘the punch’ had a lingering negative impact.

Newly appointed GM Mike Dunleavy dealt with the issue swiftly trading Poole in exchange for Chris Paul who’ll add a steady hand to ball distribution and mentoring the youngsters.

Cory Joseph and Dario Saric were picked up in free agency to bolster the bench while Brandin Podziemski and Trayce Jackson-Davis were added via the draft.

If the preseason was any indication Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody are set to take a leap with the former a strong candidate for Sixth Man.

Warriors Stats

Comparatively, Golden State also posted a 4-1 preseason record. Last year the Warriors ranked 10th on offense, and 14th defensively with the 11th-best net rating.

Winning on the road was the club’s Achille’s Heel posting only 11 regular season wins.  In their championship seasons, the team’s defense was above par and the road is where that will matter most if the Dubs wish to raise another banner.

Warriors Injury Report

To summarize the injury report…

  • Draymond Green, PF  (questionable—ankle)

Suns vs. Warriors NBA Betting Trends:

  • All in all, the Suns are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games.
  • Also, the Suns are 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games on the road.
  • By comparison, Golden State is 2-4 ATS in their last 6 games.
  • In conclusion, the Warriors are 16-3 SU in their last 19 games at home.

Free Phoenix Suns vs. Golden State Warriors NBA Prediction:

The Pacific is the toughest division in the West and should offer some outstanding battles within the Division this year. Both clubs will be motivated to make opening statements, particularly Paul and Durant versus their former squad.

Expect a high-scoring match as the preseason didn’t offer much in the way of stellar defense from either team. Expect depth to also factor which is why I like the Warriors to win and cover the spread.
