Pittsburgh Pirates vs New York Yankees Prediction 9-15-23 MLB Picks

The New York Yankees and the Pittsburgh Pirates meet Friday in MLB action from PNC Park. New York played the Red Sox in their last series, bagging wins in the Tuesday doubleheader. In the Thursday doubleheader, the Yankees took a shutout loss in game one. During the nightcap New York posted a comeback win. As for Pittsburgh, they’re fresh off a series against the Nationals. New York Yankees 

The Yankees did pretty well in the Tuesday doubleheader matchups against the Red Sox. New York took wins in those games 3-2 and 4-1. After another postponement due to rain, the Yankees had a doubleheader Thursday. In game one New York was out-hit 10-6 during a 5-0 defeat. As for game two, the Yankees blew a 5-2 lead but ultimately pulled off the win 8-5. Aaron Judge walked three times and hits a grand slam in the victory. 

In the starter slot for the Yankees on Friday it’ll be Gerrit Cole. This year in 30 starts Cole is 13-4 with a 2.79 ERA. He’s got 204 Ks in 187.0 innings. Cole is 3-2 with a 3.30 ERA over his last seven starts. 

Pittsburgh Pirates 

Over on the Pirates’ side, they lost to the Nationals 6-2 on Monday but then came back for victories 5-1 in game two and 7-6 on Wednesday. In the finale matchup Thursday, Pittsburgh held the Nationals to just two hits in a 2-0 win. Jack Suwinski and Alfonso Rivas each had a solo homer for the RBI.

As starting pitcher for Friday’s matchup the Pirates are sending out Johan Oviedo. This year in 29 starts Oviedo is 8-14 with a 4.34 ERA and 140 Ks in 161.2 innings. Oviedo is 3-3 with a 4.10 ERA across his last seven starts.

I’ll probably stick with the Yankees here. Cole has found his groove lately and is pitching well. Over the last three starts Cole is 2-0 with just three earned runs in 19.0 total innings. Another quality start in this opener would go a long way for New York. As for Oviedo, he’s 1-1 over his last trio and has given up six earned over his last 7.1 innings. In Thursday’s matchup, the Yankees had a huge second inning with the Judge grand slam in game two, and there were several nice offensive efforts to go around. New York has four or more runs in three of their last five games and I like them to keep it rolling.
