UNDATED (WKRC) - The Special Olympics has entered the world of sports betting.
For the very first time in its 55-year history, viewers will be able to place wagers on international sporting events.
Odds will be offered for a dozen competitions across six sports:
- Swimming
- Cycling
- Powerlifting
- Basketball
- Track and Field
- Soccer
, wagers can be made on things such as which country will take home the most combined gold medals for all of a certain event or individual champions for men's and women's swimming. A recent industry report revealed that people are as much as 76% more likely to watch a sporting event if they have placed a wager on it. Several pro-sports leagues have seen a drastic increase in viewership due to the legalization of sports betting in the United States.
BetOnline.ag has become the first operator to offer Special Olympics odds. A brand manager for the company told Yahoo! that it would make a $10,000 donation to a non-profit organization that supports people with intellectual disabilities after the conclusion of the Special Olympics.
