While clubs at the top of the table battle for silverware, the bottom of the Premier League standings also provide drama as teams try desperately to avoid ending the year in the relegation zone.

The bottom three sides are relegated to England's second tier, the EFL Championship, for the foreseeable future, until they earn their way back up via promotion.

Last season, Leicester City, Leeds United, and Southampton were the unlucky trio to be sent down, a massive blow to both the financial ledger and the ego. Who will follow them 12 months later?

The Sporting News brings you a full look at the current Premier League relegation picture, as teams jockey for positioning amongst the tail end of England's lucrative top flight.

Current Premier League table, standings for 2023/24 season

After the opening fixture of the season saw defending treble winners Man City stamp their new year of intent with a 3-0 win, newly promoted Burnley must lick its wounds following the first matchday of the year, hoping to push forward with their charge towards safety one week later.

The rest of the group gets started on the weekend, with Saturday and Sunday providing a chance for all sides thought to be in danger of relegation a chance to begin the year with valuable early points.

Premier League standings updated as of Saturday, August 12.

Updated Premier League relegation odds for 2023/24 season

Last season, all three newly promoted clubs achieved Premier League safety, while three established clubs went down. This season that's unlikely to be repeated, as Luton Town are thought to be a surefire bet to suffer immediate drop back to the Championship, but don't count all three promoted clubs out.

Of the other two newly promoted sides, Sheffield United are thought likely to be dumped back down as well, but Burnley are given a good shout to stay up, even after a hefty 3-0 defeat at the hands of reigning treble winners Manchester City.

While newly promoted sides are always thought to be at risk until they prove otherwise, a few established sides could be in real jeopardy as well. Wolves and Bournemouth are thought to be the two most likely clubs to struggle with relegation as it stands, while Everton, Nottingham Forest, and Fulham are also potentially in trouble.

Everton faced a scrap the last two seasons and narrowly escaped, but Fulham had a good first year back in the top flight, finishing 10th. Yet the Whites still had massive issues, largely on the defensive side, and could see a regression to the mean.

Preseason odds for Premier League relegation in 2023/24 season

As is the case every year, newly promoted sides are always considered favourites to go back down, and 2023/24 was no different.

As the season kicked off, Luton Town and Sheffield United were the top two clubs thought most likely to suffer relegation, while Championship winners Burnley were given a bit more of a chance to secure safety.

Of the established clubs, Wolves, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest were considered likely to be in trouble, while Fulham was also a more remote possibility to go down.

Odds as of August 10, 2023, one day prior to the start of the new Premier League season.
