Qatar Masters betting preview

The clock is ticking for the golfers on the DP World Tour and this week’s trip to the Middle East for the 26th edition of the Qatar Masters is the final event of the ‘regular season’.

The top 116 players at the end of this week secure full playing privileges for the 2024 season while a little further up the rankings there’s jeopardy too.

The top 60 available players in the standings qualify for next week’s Nedbank Golf Challenge and, after that, the leading 50 contend the season-ending and money-spinning DP World Tour Championship in the United Arab Emirates.

This event has always been held in the early months of the season so October is a new slot.

It looks wide open and the betting reflects that with four 20/1 co-favourites at the top of the market: England pair Aaron Rai and Jordan Smith alongside Danish duo Rasmus Hojgaard and Thorbjorn Olesen.

🏌️‍♂️ Thorjborn Olesen can be Doha king

While the betting is tight at the top, Thorbjorn Olesen looks to have the strongest chance of the market leaders.

The Dane has been in excellent form in the last month, posting a top 10 in the Open de France and then adding tied 17th (Open de Espana) and tied ninth (Andalucia Masters) in the two Spanish events played over the last fortnight.

Last week in Andalucia he hit more greens in regulation than anyone and he’ll carry that sharp iron play to Doha Golf Club, a venue where he’s often excelled.

Olesen was runner-up in 2016, third in 2014 and 12th last year.

That forms part of an excellent body of work in the Middle East and it’s continued this year with a trio of top 20s in the three early-season events in the UAE, the latest a top four in the Ras al Khaimah Championship.

With seven DP World Tour victories to his name, the latest in February’s Thailand Classic, Olesen is a proven winner. He can add number eight here at 20/1 with Spreadex

🏌️‍♂️ Eddie Pepperell can outscore Matthew Southgate

bet365 pits two Englishmen in a 72-hole match-up and the vote goes to Eddie Pepperell to get the better of Matthew Southgate.

Pepperell took to social media last week to express his relief at securing a tour card for 2024 thanks to a couple of decent weeks in Spain.

And, with the pressure off, I’m hoping he can thrive again at a venue he clearly enjoys.

Pepperell won on this course in 2018 and also made the top four two appearances earlier in 2015.

Southgate should like this venue given that it has similarities to the links tracks on which he usually thrives.

But the bottom line is that his course record at Doha shows three missed cuts and a 42nd in four appearances.

🏌️‍♂️ Rafa Cabrera Bello for Top 20

Rafa Cabrera Bello is a specialist in the Middle East. He’s a former winner of the Dubai Desert Classic and has a second, two thirds and a sixth at this week’s venue.

The Spaniard has shown some improved form of late so, back in the desert, he looks a decent bet at 10/3 with bet365 to finish in the Top 20.
