Bobby Charlton was substituted and with 10 minutes to go Norman Hunter was introduced. Uwe Seeler's header looped over Bonett to force extra- time. Gerd Muller scored the winner.

England lost to France in the 2022 World Cup. England were underdogs. Harry Kane missed a penalty. Aurelien Tchouameni scored a goal. Olivier Giroud headed a winner. England have reached the World Cups quarter-finals in each of the last nine years.

England reached the 1990 World Cup quarter-finals against Cameroon. They won 3-2 on penalties after a 2-1 defeat. They were playing in a game responsible for 71% of the goals scored in the tournament. England have reached nine previous World Cups quarter finals. Their last-four match against Belgium in 1990 was one of them.

Gareth Southgate's team should have been knocked out in the group stage by Sweden. England won the 2018 World Cup for the first time in 28 years. England fans were surprised by their team's victory.
