Red Wings vs. Senators: Preview, odds, props and best bets

Your Detroit Red Wings host the Ottawa Senators on Wednesday evening, The Senators are a last-place team with one the worst defenses in the National Hockey League. The Senators (19-25-2) are 6-13 on the road, and Detroit is 14-8-4 on their home ice. This is the fourth meeting of these teams this season. Previously, Ottawa has won twice, including back on December 9 in this same building, 5-1.

Here are the odds for the game from Caesars Sportsbook:

Can we start calling the Red Wings “Team Streak?” In October they went 6-3-1, but in December the team stumbled to lose nine of 16 games. Now, in January, the Wings are 9-2-1, among the best record in the NHL for 2024 (second only to Vancouver at 10-1-2).

There’s no mystery to the success Detroit has experienced this month: Team captain Dylan Larkin has 46 points in 43 games this year. He has scored at least one point in 11 consecutive games. This is the longest streak by a Red Wing since Larkin himself went 14 straight games with 1+ points in 2018. Only 29 Detroit players have ever had points in as many as 11 games in franchise history. Larkin has goals in each of his last three games. As a result, Detroit is inching its way up the Atlantic Division standings.

Detroit’s hot stretch has helped the team imagine their place in the NHL Playoffs. That’s what Larkin is focused on this season: returning to the postseason.

“It’s important that … we keep our foot on the gas. We can’t be satisfied with that. You see when things don’t go your way, like they did in December, but we bounced back,” Larkin told NHL.com following the win over the Knights last weekend. “We’ve had tendencies to bounce back with this group this season and I’m excited. The break is going to be good for rest but the way we’re feeling right now, I’d love to just keep it going. There’s going to be challenges coming out of that.”

Larkin scored his 200th career goal last Saturday against Las Vegas. We will continue to ride Larkin points on the top Michigan sportsbooks. His 200th career goal delighted the home crowd:

  • Detroit is 9-3 against the spread in its last 12 games, and 9-3 overall.
  • The UNDER has hit in 5 of Detroit’s last 7 games.
  • In 8 of their last 11 games, the total has been OVER in games played by Ottawa.
  • Ottawa has won its last 2 road games, by a combined score of 9-4.
  • Detroit is 4-1 in its last 5 home games, with at least one powerplay goal scored in each of those wins.

Larkin should find a point somewhere against Ottawa, which ranks 28th in the NHL in defense. If you like Larkin’s goal chances, you can find +135 odds for that prop.

These division rivals have some history between them, dating back to heated contests the last few seasons. “I’m sure it will be intense like every time we play them,” Larkin said. “That’s what I expect: A good hockey game. We need to tie up the series against them for this season.”

The Red Wings have four lines playing well right now, and are fairly healthy for the first time this season. We expect a flurry of goal-scoring possibilities and a big victory at home for the Red Wings.
