Rob Gronkowski, FanDuel Bringing Back 'Kick Of Destiny' Promo

After last year’s “wide left,” Rob Gronkowski is coming back to attempt a second Kick of Destiny for FanDuel Sportsbook.

Last year, in a month-long promotion, the sports betting app operator promised $10 million in bonus bets to customers if Gronk made a 25-yard field goal during a third quarter commercial break in the Super Bowl. And after all the hype … he missed.

But FanDuel handed out freebies to customers anyway. Anyone who bet $5 or more on the Super Bowl woke up Monday morning to discover a $5 bonus bet in their account.

“I can’t lie, when I missed the Kick of Destiny during last year’s Super Bowl, it was devastating,” Gronkowski said in a press release hyping this year’s attempt. “I told the team at FanDuel I knew I could do better and needed a shot at redemption this year. I’m going to show America I can make that kick, even with all the pressure of doing it live in front of the entire country. No wind is going to stop me, and we’re going through the uprights this year for everyone who picks that I’m going to make the kick.”

Choose your own adventure

This year, Kick of Destiny 2 is here, and it’s a little different: FanDuel Sportsbook account holders need to choose whether or not Gronk will make the 25-yarder. If you choose correctly, you’ll get a share of the $10 million in bonus bets. If you’re wrong … well, apparently bupkis.

Unlike last year, no wager is required to play.

Last year, there were a series of commercials leading up to the live field goal attempt.

This year, the first spot was previewed on CBS Mornings, where a defeated, long-haired, and bearded Gronk wanders a desert landscape, vowing to make good with this year’s attempt — with the help of a motorcycle-riding Carl Weathers. Naturally.

A future spot is set to star John Cena of WWE fame, playing a villian who hopes Gronk misses for a second time.

Super Bowl LVIII is set to kick off at 3:30 p.m. PT on Feb. 11 from Las Vegas’ Allegiant Stadium.
