Roberto Clemente Day And 2023 MLB World Series Odds

The influence of Latin American baseball in the Major Leagues wouldn't be the same without Roberto Clemente - the best Hispanic player to ever play the game. On Friday, Sept. 15, MLB honors the late Hall of Famer with Roberto Clemente Day. Players around MLB will wear No. 21 in his honor, and PNC Park in Pittsburgh will hold a special ceremony when the Pirates host the New York Yankees.

Hispanics make up 31.9 percent of the players in the Major Leagues in 2022. Roberto Clemente was Puerto Rican, and his exploits are remembered in the Major Leagues and recognized throughout Latin sports in the United States.

Clemente’s son, Roberto Jr. talks about the Roberto Clemente Foundation, and the importance of honoring Roberto’s legacy of faith, love and service, helping those less fortunate. Thursday, Sept. 14 was the first time the foundation had a gala dinner. A baseball clinic will follow Saturday’s game between the Pirates and Yankees.

And this week, the Puerto Rican photo exhibit ‘3000’ was unveiled at PNC Park. The exhibit tells the story of Clemente's life and legacy, including his 3,000th hit in 1972.

Roberto Clemente Day was established by Major League Baseball in 2002 to honor the legacy of the Hall of Famer and 15-time All-Star who died in a plane crash on New Year's Eve 1972 while attempting to deliver supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.

In his honor, MLB annually presents the Roberto Clemente Award to the player who best represents the game of baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field. Each teams Roberto Clemente Award nominees were announced last week, and are honored on Sept. 15 at ballparks across the league.

BetMGM was the first sportsbook to have a big presence at PNC Park starting in 2021. The ‘King of Sportsbooks’ has odds to win the World Series for the following teams in playoff contention with about 15 games remaining in the regular season.
