Ryder Cup Odds, Picks & Predictions 2023

This Friday at Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Rome, Italy, the 44th edition of the Ryder Cup will get underway with Team USA aiming to win two straight for the first time since 1993.

Each one of the top 13 players in the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) will be participating (seven for Team USA, six for Team Europe). All 12 members of Team USA are ranked inside the top 25 of the OWGR and it’s this depth that has oddsmakers favoring the Americans to win the cup in hostile territory.

Despite the European having home-field advantage, so to speak, the Americans come in as slight -110 favorites to win outright. Team Europe comes back at +120, while a 14-14 draw is listed at a price of +1100.

In the 43-edition history of the Ryder Cup, two competitions ended in 14-14 ties (1969 and 1989). Eight of the last ten editions have been decided by at least three points and the average margin of victory over that span is 5.6 points.

Since the Ryder Cup adopted its current USA-vs-Europe format in 1979, Team Europe leads with an 11-9-1 record. That includes a 7-3 record over the last ten tournaments.

Not so coincidentally, the last time Team USA managed to win on European soil was the last time they were able to retain the cup, winning the 1993 edition at The Belfry in England by a score of  15-13.

2023 Ryder Cup Rosters & Rankings

Both teams will feature first-time captains this year with Zach Johnson making the calls for Team USA and Luke Donald piloting Team Europe.

The number of captain’s picks was expanded from three to six for the 2023 tournament. Johnson added Brooks Koepka, Jordan Spieth, Collin Morikawa, Sam Burns, Rickie Fowlers, and Justin Thomas to the Team USA roster.

Donald went with Tommy Fleetwood, Sepp Straka, Shane Lowry, Justin Rose and two youngsters: 23-year-old Swede Ludvig Åberg and 22-year-old Dane Nicolai Højgaard. Åberg, the former #1-ranked amateur, has improved his OWGR from 3064 at the end of 2022 all the way to 80th as of this week.

Four members of Team Europe will be making their Ryder Cup debut: Straka, Åberg, Højgaard, and Robert MacIntyre. Four Americans are also first-timers: Sam Burns, Wyndham Clark, Brian Harman, and Max Homa.

The history of the Ryder Cup on European soil is extremely unkind to Team USA. As mentioned, they haven’t won the Ryder Cup on that side of the Atlantic since 1993, losing the last six editions of the tournament in Europe by an average of 4.33 points.

Both teams have their share of Ryder Cup rookies debuting in Rome, and that’s going to be a tougher job for the Americans in hostile territory. Every edition of the tournament reminds us that that Ryder Cup atmosphere is unlike anything these players witness on the PGA Tour.

At plus money, Team Europe is the best bet.
