Experienced England can get over the line in Sydney

Tournament football is all about peaking at the right time – and at this year’s Women’s World Cup, the Lionesses seem to have done exactly that.

They stand on the brink of history this weekend in aiming to become the first senior England side since 1966 to win a World Cup. Everything is in place for them to get the job done at Stadium Australia in Sydney.

The Lionesses looked fairly underwhelming in the early stages of the tournament, grinding out 1-0 wins against Haiti and Denmark before thrashing China 6-1 in their final group game.

But they then rode their luck in their first knockout encounter, drawing 0-0 with Nigeria in the last 16 before edging out the West African nation on penalties and then defeating Colombia 2-1.

On the one hand, the Lionesses could be said to have produced a string of sluggish performances. On the other, their record may be considered an example of fine game management.

And undoubtedly England saved their best performance for when it mattered most, beating co-hosts Australia 3-1 in the semi-finals in front of a vociferous home crowd in Sydney.

The Lionesses were quick to take the sting out of the atmosphere and were only breached by a wonderstrike from Sam Kerr.

Defensive discipline has carried England through this tournament and it can see them over the line against Spain, who have been impressive but lack the major tournament experience of the Euro 2022 winners.

Boss Jorge Vilda has worked wonders to get his group to gel given how team morale has suffered in the past year. But the wins over the Netherlands and Sweden were nervy and, with Lauren James returning from suspension, England are the selection to win this.

All-European final should not be short of goals

The Lionesses’ earlier matches in the tournament were cagey and low-scoring – three of their opening four matches featured under 2.5 goals – but they have warmed up as the tournament has progressed and can contribute to a high-scoring game against La Roja.

Sarina Wiegman’s side turned on the style against Australia last time out, with Ella Toone, Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo getting on the scoresheet.

The return of James only enhances their attacking threat and over 2.5 goals is worth backing in this Women’s World Cup final.

Spain’s tally of 17 goals is the highest in this year’s tournament, with a range of players rising to the occasion while Alexia Putellas has been working her way back from injury.

Against Sweden, it was full back Olga Carmona who bagged the winner, and La Roja like to play on the front foot – so expect an entertaining final.

Returning James can make her mark

After England’s penalty shootout victory over Nigeria in the last 16, all the talk was about forward James.

After a VAR review in the 87th minute, she was sent off against the Super Falcons for stamping on Michelle Alozie, showing a lapse in temperament.

It was a disappointing moment for James and it also meant England would be without one of their key forwards for their subsequent two knockout contests.

Fortunately for the Lionesses, they got through both their next matches and James is ready to return for the final.

She has looked like England’s most dangerous attacking player throughout the tournament, contributing three goals and three assists in four matches.

James also has a shot accuracy of 71 per cent in the tournament and she is worth a selection in a bet builder along with the Lionesses to win and both teams to score.
