SPOTY 2022: Six nominees revealed for Wednesday’s awards show

BBC have announced the shortlist of six contenders for the 2022 Sports Personality of the Year award. Beth Mead is the favourite after helping England's women's team win Euro 2022. Other nominees are Jessica Gadirova, Eve Muirhead, Ben Stokes, Ronnie O'Sullivan and athlete Jake Wightman. The winner will be decided by a public vote on Wednesday. Gary Lineker, Clare Balding, Gabby Logan and Alex Scott will present the awards. Usain Bolt will receive the Lifetime Achievement award and Lionel Messi will win World Sport Star of The Year.

Jessica Gadirova is one of six nominees for the SPOTY 2022 awards show. She is the fifth British athlete to win an individual world title in artistic gymnastics. Gadrova won team silver and all-around bronze at the Olympics and retained her European floor title.

Beth Mead is one of six nominees for the SPOTY 2022 awards show on BBC One on Wednesday. She was named player of the tournament in England's Euro 2022 success and won the Golden Boot.

Eve Muirhead's curling team won gold at the Winter Olympics in Beijing. Muirshead has just won the World Mixed Doubles Championship.

Ronnie O'Sullivan won his seventh World Championship title in 2022. He beat Judd Trump 18-13. O’Sullivan is ranked world number one and has won the Champion of Champions and Hong Kong Masters this year.

Ben Stokes was voted Sports Personality of the Year in 2019. He guided England to the T20 World Cup and three Test series victories since being appointed captain in April. On Tuesday, he helped England write history by becoming the first team to win 3-0 in Pakistan.

Jake Wightman won the 1,500m at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon in July. His father Geoff was commentating on the race. Wightsman also won European silver and Commonwealth bronze.
