If you had Tsitsipas vs Auger-Aliassime penciled in as the quarterfinal in this section of the Australian Open men’s singles draw, you weren’t alone.

But Auger-Aliassime, who never found his groove during this trip Down Under, didn’t make the date.

Upset King Lehecka to the Quarters

It might well have startled Auger-Aliassime to face a player younger than he is – by some 15 months – in the fourth round of a major.

But that happened. And other than a good start to the match, Auger-Aliassime found himself outduelled from the baseline, and out-performed at the net.

When the points lasted five shots or fewer, the Canadian had the edge. As soon as it got into the 5-9 shot category or longer, the young Czech was the overwhelmingly better performer.

He will likely not have that luxury against Tsitipias, who will offer a lot more pushback in those extended exchanges.

Tsitsipas – Sinner a Tough Fourth-Rounder

You would expect, sooner rather than later, that Tsitsipas vs. Jannik Sinner could well be a final-weekend matchup at a major.

For now, with Sinner at the No. 11 seed, it was an unfortunate fourth-round clash for both.

Especially for Sinner, who went out in five sets.

For a while, in the middle of the match, it looked like Tsitsipas would suffer more crushing disappointment at a major – except this time, before getting to the final eight.

But he rallied. Even if the four hours it took to close the deal might well wear on him.

He won’t dislike his draw, though; that’s for sure. There have been many moments through the juniors and early pros where Auger-Aliassime (and his fellow Canadian Denis Shapovalov) absolutely have had Tsitsipas’s number.

Lehecka mentioned during his post-match interviews that he certainly hoped Tsitsipas remembered their match in Rotterdam.

He gave him plenty of trouble, and he hopes to do it again.

That event was Lehecka’s breakthrough tournament, going from the qualifying to the semis and beating Shapovalov along the way (and winning three-setters over Botic Van de Zandschulp and Lorenzo Musetti). At No. 137 going into that event, he left it having broken into the top 100 for the first time.

After that, he played a mix of Challengers and ATP events and was the main draw at all four majors in 2022. But until his run this week in Melbourne, he had yet to win a main-draw match at this level.

He’s already top-40 with what he’s done in Melbourne. If he can break Tsitsipas’s heart, he’ll be top 30.

Despite his relatively modest stature (officially 6-1 and a wiry 180 pounds), Lehecka displayed nearly as much pop on serve as Auger-Aliassime in their fourth-round match. He can flatten his groundstrokes out, and that has proven a far more effective play with the conditions in Melbourne – especially the problematic, fluffy Dunlop ball.

But Sinner can hit very flat as well. And it wasn’t quite enough.

It feels as though Tsitsipas is ready to step this up. And with Djokovic on the other side of the draw, take it into Sunday. It’s not likely Lehecka will trip him up, although he might take a set – if we have to pick one, the first set.
