The 2023 Stuttgart Open is Nick Kyrgios’ comeback tournament. The mercurial Aussie has yet to play a competitive match on the ATP Tour this season. He featured in an exhibition match alongside Novak Djokovic in January in Melbourne, but would later pull out from the Australian Open due to a knee injury. Kyrgios underwent surgery to fix a cyst and has been rehabbing for the last few months in order to get match fit. It was inevitable his comeback was going to be on grass, as he is extremely dangerous on this surface, with his game marinading so well with the lawns. Last year, Kyrgios played a super grass-court swing, winning 12 of 15 matches, and reaching his first Grand Slam final at Wimbledon where he lost to Djokovic. I fully expect him to hit the ground running right out of the gates here. Yibign Wu was one of the most unexpected champions in the first half of the year when he won in Dallas. While the Chinese is a stoic competitor, he just doesn’t have the weaponry to hurt Kyrgios on grass.
