Super Bowl Gatorade Color Odds, Prop Bets & History

What do the most successful NFL head coaches of the past 40 years have in common? They've all participated in the historic ritual of being drenched in Gatorade moments before celebrating a Super Bowl championship. And the color of that sticky shower is the subject of one of the most popular Super Bowl prop bets.

You have to wonder what goes on at sports betting sites when their Super Bowl odds prep reaches the point where they're setting numbers for the color of the winner's Gatorade bath.

Hilarity aside, this has become a wildly entertaining Super Bowl prop to bet on – and users should expect to see all of the best Super Bowl betting sites offering up odds on which flavor of sports drink will be used to ring in an NFL championship.

Our Super Bowl picks don't include Gatorade color, but we're happy to help you in your quest to one day tell your grandchildren: "I just knew it was going to be purple!"

Super Bowl Gatorade Color Odds

As we wait for this year's Super Bowl Gatorade color odds, here's a look at the odds from DraftKings, FanDuel and BetMGM for last year's Super Bowl 56 between the Los Angeles Rams and Cincinnati Bengals:

Those who put their faith in blue last year were rewarded when Rams head coach Sean McVay was hit by the No. 4 favorite on DraftKings (and the No. 2 option at both FanDuel and BetMGM).

For comparison's sake, here were the odds on BetMGM for the Super Bowl 55 tilt between the Kansas City Chiefs and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, won 31-9 by the Bucs:

  • Orange: +100
  • Red/Pink: +175
  • Clear/Water: +175
  • Yellow/Green/Lime: +200
  • Blue: +650
  • Purple: +650

The long shot came through in that one, with Bruce Arians taking a blue Gatorade shower in the final moments of Tampa Bay's one-sided victory.

Super Bowl Gatorade Color History

Part of what makes the Super Bowl Gatorade color prop so intriguing is that, historically, there hasn't been a real front-runner.

Here's a breakdown of the color of the winning coach's Gatorade shower over the years:

Aside from several years where Bill Belichick was a bit of a Gatorade curmudgeon, we've seen winning coach showers in the overwhelming majority of Super Bowls since the tradition first began. Here's a look at the number of winning Super Bowl Gatorade baths by color:

  • Orange: 5
  • Clear: 4
  • Blue: 4
  • None: 4
  • Yellow: 3
  • Purple: 2

As you can see, there is no real rhyme or reason – though we'll share a few ways that you can potentially improve your odds of betting on the correct Super Bowl Gatorade color.

Super Bowl Gatorade Color Betting Tips

There's only so much you can do to improve your chances here, but there are some things to consider if you want to give yourself even a sliver of an edge:

  • Consider following both teams' beat writers in the days leading up to the Super Bowl. They might either address the Gatorade topic with their own knowledge of the subject (based on their proximity of the team), or it might come up in one of their player interviews.
  • Make note of any color match potential that exists with the Super Bowl finalists. We might never know what Gatorade color the Cincinnati Bengals would have dumped on their coach had they won last year, but it's no coincidence that orange was a betting favorite.
  • If you're still in doubt, go with blue! Not only has it been the winning color three out of four years, but it also happens to be the best-selling Gatorade flavor overall.

Super Bowl Prop Bets

Prop bet enthusiasts have much more to choose from than wagering on what color of Gatorade will drench the winning head coach; here's a look at some of the more popular Super Bowl prop bets across all of the best sportsbooks:
