Super Bowl LVIII expected to drive $23 billion in bets

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) — The estimates indicate a significant 35% increase from 2023 figures, as reported by the American Gaming Association. The surge in numbers can be attributed to various factors.

One major factor is the expansion of legal sports betting across the country. Commercial advertisements promoting sports betting have become commonplace, with thirty-eight states, including Connecticut, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico, now offering regulated betting options. In anticipation of events like Super Sunday, venues like the new Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook are gearing up for increased activity.

News 8’s John Pierson spoke with general manager of the Mohegan Sun FanDuel Sportsbook, Brad Bryant, about a survey that indicates that approximately 67-million adults could combine to bet $23-billion on Super Bowl LVIII.

“I think that’s a lot of it. There’s more that’s legal now. There’s not as much in the underworld as they say. This is like March Madness, Kentucky Derby. It brings people out that maybe don’t bet year round, but they want to have a bet on the Super Bowl. No better place to watch the game,” said Bryant. “The 140-foot video wall behind us. Everyone that gets a table this weekend will have a Stadium-style buffet, they’ll get a couple of free drink tickets, they get a chance to win free slot play.”

Moreover, the hosting of the Super Bowl in Las Vegas this year adds to the allure of betting on the event.

According to the American Gaming Association, more than 42-million American adults plan to place a traditional sports wager online, at a retail sportsbook, or with a bookie, representing a 41% increase from last year.
