Super League star left out as huge transfer looms

The likes of Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors, Warrington Wolves, Hull KR and St Helens will be involved in some huge games this week in the context of their season but one Super League side in the shape of Huddersfield Giants will not have one of their key men.

This comes after a lot of rumour around the futures of star players, namely halfbacks. Hull FC’s Jake Clifford is set to move back to the NRL, Lachlan Lam’s future at Leigh Leopards is unclear as Wests Tigers gun for Salford Red Devils’ Brodie Croft.

Leeds’ halfbacks have unsure futures as well whilst Catalans Dragons are set to lose both Mitchell Pearce and Tyrone May to the NRL.

Following this, reports emerged from L’Independent that the Dragons could move for former St Helens halfback and Huddersfield star Theo Fages, a French international.

When asked about this last week, Ian Watson said:

“We’d love Theo to be here with us. Like I said, there’s been a lot of things that have gone on in and around situations with Theo, but that’s probably for Theo to explain as he goes forward.

“We’ll see where it takes us with Theo. Theo is really committed to Huddersfield and he’s upset at the kind of number of games he’s missed this year and wants to obviously finish the season really strongly so yeah we’ll see what happens and what develops as we go forward.

“Everyone within the club’s well aware of the situation develops as we go forward with everyone within the club’s well aware of the situation who it’s something that’s probably we’ve got to wait and see more so than anything else.”

However, according to Catalans journalist Catalan Media on Twitter the deal has been completed.

He said:

“Just asked jubilant coach Ian Watson about Theo Fages’ future, he has the ultimate respect for his French protegé so he will leave it to the player to announce but he is coming home.”

He has now been left out of the squad this week having been named last week in France.

It is important to remember he has been carrying an injury and Olly Russell was fantastic in France so Fages is likely not needed but it is an interesting development. Will Pryce is named in his place.

The Giants’ squad is below:

Leroy Cudjoe and Ashton Golding are back in the squad following their respective injuries
