Sweden vs South Africa
FIFA Women’s World Cup
Date: 23 July 2023, Sunday
Kick-off at 06:00 UK / 07:00 CET
Venue: Wellington Regional Stadium (Wellington).

Sweden and South Africa open happenings in Group G at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia/New Zealand in a proper mismatch on Sunday at Wellington Regional Stadium.

The European outfits are massive favorites to start the competition with the win and we fully expect them to justify the tag against the African minnows.

Sweden made it to the knockout stage of the tournament in all but one editions. They were runners-up in 2003 and they have reached the semifinal on four separate occasions.

Also, the Swedes have done very well of late under Peter Gerhardsson who has been in charge since 2017.

Gerhardsson has led the team to the semifinals at both World Cup and EURO as well as to the silverware at the Olympic Games (all in the latest editions).

Sweden should not have any problems topping this group and such an achievement would be a massive one in terms of the team’s ambitions knowing they’ll likely avoid the United States in the R16 this way.

South Africa, on the other side, debuted at the biggest stage four years ago in France where they failed to claim a single point in defeats to Spain, China, and Germany.

They’ve experienced a serious boom in recent years, though, winning their inaugural international trophy last year by beating Morocco in the final of the African Cup of Nations.

South Africa conceded eight goals in the defeats to Serbia and Botswana in recent friendlies but they managed to make amends by beating Costa Rica 0-2 in the final test ahead of the World Cup.

Sweden vs South Africa Head-to-head

  • Sweden have three wins and a draw in the last four games against South Africa and a goal difference of 8-1 in the process.
  • South Africa, however, managed to keep the Swedes scoreless in a goalless draw in the most recent friendly played in January 2019.

Sweden vs South Africa Prediction

Fridolina Rolfo has scored a goal for Barcelona against her former team Wolfsburg in the Champions League final last season.

She usually plays in a much more attacking role for the national team and we can see the value in backing her to score anytime against the likes of South Africa at the 1.83 odds. We will alternatively back Sweden to win by three or more goals difference at the 1.80 odds.
