Switzerland Make History With BJK Cup Win in Glasgow

There were at least three World Cups taking place in the UK on the weekend. Britain hosted the World Cup of Women's Tennis. Switzerland made history by winning the tournament for the first time.

Every World Cup needs a successful host to generate interest in the host country. Great Britain won the Women's World Tennis/Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. They beat Spain 3-0 to reach the semifinals.

GB's doubles team Alicia Barnett and Olivia Nicholls lost to Sam Stosur and Storm Sanders.   They won the second set tie-break, but the match tie break-away proved too much for them. It was a shame for the fans. They had seen tennis at its finest.

Switzerland won the tennis tournament. Australia lost in the final. Viktorija Golubic and Jil Teichmann were the top singles players for Switzerland. Storm Sanders had played both singles and doubles during the week. Belinda Bencic won in straight sets 6-2 6.1. She is due to get married in Australia this week and she might have to play in another doubles match. She also won a singles match against Ajla Tomljanovic. The result was decisive. It was the first time that a team from Australia had lost a tennis match to Switzerland in a World Cup final, and it was also the second time in this tournament that the team had also lost the opening match of the tournament to a Swiss team.

Belinda Bencic won the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. It was Switzerland's first ever World Cup of Women's Tennis. Ben ced her greatest achievements as a tennis player while representing Switzerland. Switzerland are only the 12th nation to win the trophy. Great Britain and Serbia have never won it. Switzerland want to defend it next year. They should call it the World cup of women's tennis. The last time it was called the tennis tournament.
