Thursday’s racing tips offer selections from the jumps at Fakenham and Wincanton.

Wincanton racing tips

2.00: Spartan Army 5/4 (NAP)

A few interesting hurdlers in this field, but none compare to the potential of this Alan King-trained four-year-old who has the much superior form.

Those closer in the market have all had close wins or places in Class 4 novice hurdles but will need to find plenty more to beat this Grade 2 runner.

He is also given nearly a stone by Celtic Art and Matata making it a tough run but they both have plenty of improving to do, which they can certainly do today.

2.30: Midnight Midge 2/1 & exacta with Harlem Soul

There looks to be a match between Harlem Soul and Midnight Midge if the pair can replicate their best forms.

But Harlem Soul will need to show more over a trip that he’s not tried over fences yet in what is an ideal trip for Midnight Midge.

Harlem Soul, trained by Syd Hosie, is a gelding sired by Frankel and appeals a lot on paper and form.

Beating Huelgoat last time on Boxing Day on this course but that was over 2m4f.

The five-year-old didn’t do too well hurdling in comparison to his sudden improvement chasing but if he does continue improving the two should cross the line together.

Midnight Midge was also there on Boxing Day but finished well back in sixth place, but returned to form in a tougher Class 3 over course and distance last month.

The nine-year-old also beat Huelgoat at Taunton in early December and remains a clear danger over this distance, but an exacta looks ideal to cover both bases.

Fakenham racing tips

3.15: Sergeant Wilson 6/4

Causes for concern on all of this field with disappointing runs in their latest contests.

Sergeant Wilson was favourite last time but raced far too freely and the Twiston-Davies team have added a hood as a result.

If that works he should be the danger to these novices and is worth the price over the rest.

Pistoletto remains an interest though on hurdle debut and is a 150/1 early shot for the Supreme Novices Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival.

Intriguing debutant that was seen plenty of times on the flat and with that entry suggests there might be more to come if this first jump contest goes well – and it’s worth keeping an eye on his price before the off to gauge potential.
