TCU vs. SMU: Preview and Prediction

The SMU Mustangs and the TCU Horned Frogs are playing each other this weekend.

TCU and SMU will play each other on September 24, 2022 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas.

TCU and SMU are playing for the right to keep the game's famed ‘iron skillet’ for a year. This will be the first time that TCU head coach Sonny Dykes will face his former team, SMu. Dyke coached the Mustangs for four seasons (2018-21).

Max Duggan has been starting for the TCU football team since Chandler Morris sprained his knee. Duggans has gone 25-of-32 passing for 417 yards with five touchdowns and no interceptions.

Tre’Vius Hodges-Tomlinson was Pro Football Focus‘s third-highest graded returning Big 12 cornerback in press coverage last season. He has four tackles and a pass break-up in two games this season and hopes to improve his NFL Draft stock.

Tanner Mordecai is a former Oklahoma recruit who plays for SMU. He has completed nearly 60 percent of his passes, tossed 10 touchdowns and thrown for 1,013 yards per game. TCU will have to slow him down.

Isaac Slade-Matautia is the Mustangs' leading tackler with 22 tackles and one quarterback hurry in three games. He is a native of Hawaii and an Oregon transfer.

TCU is 2-0 after beating Colorado and Tarleton. The win over Tarleton was a garden-variety FBS/FCS pounding. TCU should start getting a better sense of who they are this weekend against SMU.

Rhett Lashlee took over for Dykes as head coach at SMU. He worked for UCF's Gus Malzahn from the pair’s days at Springdale High School in Arkansas until 2017. Lash Lee worked as Dyke”s offensive coordinator for two years, took the same job at Miami for 2 seasons and then returned to SMu.

SMU is playing at home against TCU. The game is always exciting. SMU will win.
