Australian commercial broadcaster Network Ten has elected to withdraw from the process to potentially retain its free-to-air rights for domestic horse racing showpiece the Melbourne Cup, stating such a deal would result in “commercial constraints”.
Ten’s five-year deal with the Victoria Racing Club (VRC), operator of the Melbourne Cup Carnival, is worth A$100m (€61.7m/$67.8m), and expires after this year’s event, which runs from November 4-11. That contract covers all rights excluding live streaming on betting platforms.
