The Derby odds and runners for Epsom Racecourse showpiece

The Derby at Epsom Racecourse is the most coveted flat race in horse racing with everyone hoping to train, ride or bet on the winner.

Desert Crown won last year under Richard Kingscote for trainer Sir Michael Stoute.

This is the prestigious flat race of the season and the crown jewel of the Classics.

The five Classics in horse racing are: The Derby, the Oaks, 1000 Guineas, St Leger and 2000 Guineas.

The winner of the Derby Trial, Military Order is the big favourite for the event but this year it's still wide open with odds starting at 10/3 - just ahead of Auguste Rodin.

Military Order is trained by Charlie Appleby for owner Godolphin and won on his first attempt over 1m4f.

The Betfred Derby (Group 1) consists of three-year-old colts who race over the 1m4f around Epsom racecourse which has been raced every year since 1780.

Aidan O'Brien has won six of the last 11 renewals of the race but Appleby has won two of the last five.

O'Brien's runner this year is second favourite at 9/2 with Auguste Rodin who was not quite with it at Newmarket's 2000 Guineas.

That was over 1m though and a step up in trip is set to suit a whole host of runners.

Only Military Order and Arrest have won over 1m4f though and are among the two safer bets in that regard having both won big Group contests while stepping up to this distance.

Arrest was incredibly impressive in the Group 3 Chester Vase Stakes winning by over six lengths in the end under Frankie Dettori, who will be having his last ever season in the UK as a jockey.

That was on soft ground at Chester which is a difficult track to get right and that form really suits the way Epsom is laid out too, being similarly sharp and left-handed.
