The Greatest Arlington Million was the First
The first Arlington Million was held in 1981. John Henry was the defending turf champion. He was bought sight unseen for $1,100. Ron McAnally took over training in the fall of 1979. By the time of the first Million, John was an Eclipse Award winner and Horse of The Year. The Bart was ignored at 40-1. The race was broadcast on NBC Sports. More than 30,000 people attended the race. It was a great success. Chicago was back on the racing map. A crowd of more than30,00 people filled the Suburban Chicago race place to the brim.
