Three Players Joining MLB Hall of Fame

The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum has announced that three players will be enshrined as part of the 2024 class of players. The Baseball Writers’ Association of America voted on a long list of players, and there were just three former players that received at least 75% of the vote.

Those three players that were voted into the Hall of Fame were Adrian Beltre, Todd Helton, and Joe Mauer, and they will be joined by Jim Leyland at the induction ceremony. Leyland was voted in by the Contemporary Baseball Era Non-Players Committee.

This is always a big day during the MLB offseason, and it’s a day that many former players look forward to. Three of the 2024 members made it in on their first try on the ballot, which adds to the honor that comes with being named a Hall of Famer.

Beltre Nearly Perfect

Adrian Beltre was considered a lock to be named a Hall of Famer on his first try on the ballot, and that was exactly what took place. Beltre received 95.1% of the vote when the results were announced, and many would argue that the number should have been even higher.

The third baseman made four All Star teams throughout his career, and they all came after his age 31 season. Longevity helped Beltre become a Hall of Fame player as he played for 21 years and posted the third-highest career WAR at that position.

Beltre belted over 400 home runs during his career, collected over 3,000 hits, and also won five Gold Gloves. He will also go down as one of the best players in league history from the Dominican Republic, becoming just the fifth player from that country to be enshrined.

His best years of his career came with the Texas Rangers, and he will be donned with the cap of that team on his plaque.

Mauer Could Hit

Joe Mauer was the other player to get the call on his first year on the ballot, racking up 76.1% of the vote to barely sneak in. It was clear that Mauer was good enough to be a Hall of Famer at some point, but getting in on the first ballot was an added honor.

Mauer won three batting titles throughout his career, becoming the only catcher in league history to accomplish that feat. Not only was Mauer able to hit for average, but he slugged enough during his career to win the American League MVP Award in 2009.

He became just the third catcher in league history to be voted into the Hall of Fame during his first year on the ballot, joining Johnny Bench and Ivan Rodriguez. Mauer spent his entire 15-year career with the Minnesota Twins and is one of the best players in franchise history.

Helton Finally Gets the Call

Todd Helton was not a strong candidate in his first year on the ballot, but he has been gaining some momentum since that time. This was the 6th year on the ballot for the former Colorado Rockies great, and he got nearly 80% of the vote.

The career numbers for Helton were hard to ignore, but it was clear that voters were not as impressed because he spent his career hitting at Coors Field. Helton hit .316 during his career with 369 home runs, and he also won three Gold Gloves.

Even though Helton had more success while playing at Coors Field, he was one of the best hitters of his generation. Voters had started to give Helton more support over the years, and there weren’t as many good candidates to steal votes from the Rockies star.

Other Players Miss Out

Billy Wagner narrowly missed out on getting the call this year, but it’s almost a guarantee that he will eventually get this honor. Wagner had 73.8 percent of the vote this year, and he should get enough support to push him over the edge moving forward.

Gary Sheffield was the next closest when the votes were announced as he had 63.9 percent of the vote. Sheffield got more support than Andruw Jones, who checked in with 61.6 percent of the vote.

Players from the PED/Steroid Era continue to be ignored by voters, and it seems clear that these players will no longer get enough support.
