Tigers vs. Rockies: Odds, picks and predictions 7/2/23

On Sunday, the Tigers and Rockies will meet at Coors Field in an afternoon game to end their three-game series. On Saturday, Detroit won in extra-innings to even the series.

Detroit sits only four games out of first place in the loss column. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, you can get +4000 on the Tigers to win the American League Central. That means a winning $50 bet would be worth $2,000.

Matt Manning (1-1, 4.15 ERA, 11 K in 17.1 IP) vs Connor Seabold (1-4, 5.98 ERA, 46 K in 61.2 IP)

The Tigers will pin their hopes on Matt Manning for the finale against Colorado. Manning is making his second start since returning from a fracture in his foot in April. While it seems Manning’s lower half is healthy, he hasn’t shown an ability to master his four-seam fastball. Opponents are hitting .313 with a .594 slugging percentage off the pitch.

Since he joined the rotation in early May, Connor Seabold has been inconsistent, so much so that he’s essentially a number five starter who can’t be expected to get into the fifth inning. His pitches drift a bit too high into the strike zone, which is why he’s been victimized for 12 home runs.

Sunday’s game will likely end up with many crooked numbers, which means high run totals, and lots of hits and baserunners.

None of the Tigers batters have ever faced Seabold. The hottest Detroit hitter is Jake Rogers, who is batting .375 with three extra-base hits and a .688 slugging percentage in the last seven games through Friday. Rogers is a classic streak hitter, and in the thin air of Denver, we like his chances to get a baseball into the seats beyond the outfield.

Rookie shortstop Ezequiel Tovar on the Rockies is not getting the attention he deserves. He’s been overshadowed by the hype surrounding Cincinnati’s Elly De La Cruz, who plays the same position and is also a rookie. But Tovar is having a superb rookie campaign, and he’s red-hot as of late, hitting .375 with four extra-base hits and 8 RBI in his last 8 games.

Tigers -115 on Moneyline (from DraftKings) … We like the Tigers to finish this road trip with a series win against the mediocre Rockies. Detroit will play next on Tuesday following an off day, hosting Oakland on the 4th of July.

The odds on this three-leg parlay are +950 from DraftKings Sportsbook:

  • Harold Castro to get a hit
  • Ezequiel Tovar to hit a home run
  • Connor Seabold to record 3+ strikeouts
