Can Minnesota Revert to Late-Season Run of Road Success?

The Timberwolves have come out on the short end of both of their road games in the postseason, losing to the Lakers in the play-in tournament in addition to their Game 1 loss in Denver.

But it might be a bit premature to write them off in this series, because prior to the end of the regular season, the Timberwolves had been on a pretty impressive run on the road.

  • In their last dozen road games in the regular season, the Timberwolves went 9-3 SU and ATS.
  • In their last nine road games against Western Conference foes, the Timberwolves went 7-2 SU and ATS.
  • For the season, Minnesota went 13-13 SU and 15-11-0 ATS on the road against Western Conference opposition.

Of their final nine road wins in the regular season, seven were against teams who qualified for either the play-in tournament or the playoffs. Overall, 13 of their 20 road wins in the regular season were against teams who either made the play-in or playoffs.

In the Western Conference, only four teams won 20 or more road games in the regular season, and the Timberwolves were one of them. So, they certainly have the ability to pull out a road win in this series, even though they went 0 for 2 in Denver in the regular season.

All that said, it’s going to take a big, big effort for them to knock off the Nuggets at Ball Arena. After all, only seven teams have managed to do so this season.

Along with being second in the NBA in home wins in the regular season, the Nuggets have been good to bettors as well, going 26-15-0 ATS at home in the regular season and then covering in the series-opening win over Minnesota.

Also, when favored by five or more points this season, the Nuggets are now 33-9 SU and 24-18-0 ATS this season. On the other side, the Timberwolves are now 9-12 SU and 12-9-0 ATS this season when an underdog of five or more points.

In Game 1, Porter had 18 points and 11 rebounds, and of his seven made field goals, four were from outside.

Porter has performed well against the Timberwolves this season, other than a four-point effort in the Nuggets’ 122-118 win at Ball Arena on January 18. In each of the other four games, he has scored at least 18 points, and he has made four or more threes three times against Minnesota this season.
