TJ Smith, Doncaster Mile results: I Wish I Win wins, Mr Brightside goes back-to-back

I Wish I Win has taken out the TJ Smith Stakes, while Mr Brightside has gone back-to-back in the Doncaster Mile in wet conditions at Randwick on Saturday.

Earlier, Militarize won the first Group 1 of the day with a long-odds victory for Joao Moreira and Chris Waller in the Inglis Sires.

I Wish I Win gave veteran trainer Peter Moody his third TJ Smith victory, adding to the two he won with Black Caviar.

Just as it had done with Black Caviar, the Moody-Luke Nolen combination again proved a winning one over 1200m at Randwick.

Three-time winner Nature Strip had jumped favourite at just under $5 and turned for home in front and extended away from the field at the top of the straight.

It wasn’t to be another victory for the Chris Waller trained gelding, as Mazu, Giga Kick and then I Wish I Win began wearing the leader down.

I Wish I Win had been near enough to last at the turn but rattled home down the outside to win by half a length from Giga Kick, with Mazu another half length back in third.

Punters could get around $9.50 on the four-year-old gelding at the jump.

Take a look at the finish below.

In the Doncaster, Mr Brightside was around about a $6 favourite to defend his crown and he did just enough to hold off My Oberon and get the victory.

Zac Purton had found a dream spot in the run aboard the five-year-old gelding and a gap opened up at the top of the straight to give him every chance to win.

Nugget threatened on the outside before My Oberon burst through along the inside, setting up a fight for the line after which the Lindsay Park-trained Mr Brightside finished in front by a nose.

In the final Group 1 of the day, the Australian Derby, Major Beel caused an upset when winning for Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott at $41.

Tim Clark kept the roughie out of trouble on the pace and held off Virtuous Circle by a length.
