Top five Lockinge Stakes winners of the 21st Century including Frankel, Ribchester and more

Planet Sport's Jonathan Doidge picks out his five best Lockinge Stakes winners since the Millennium. The Lockede is held at Newbury. It was inaugurated in 1958. Pall Mall won it for the first time.

Hawk Wing won the Lockinge Stakes in 2003 by 11 lengths. He had lost the 2,000 Guineas to Rock Of Gibraltar a year earlier and finished second in the Derby and Eclipse. His last start was lame and he was retired after the Queen Anne at Royal Ascot.

Paco Boy won the Lockinge Stakes in 2010. He was trained by Richard Hannon and ridden by former champion Richard Hughes. It was the first of four Group 1 wins for a talented 7f-1m colt. Paco Boy has since gone on to enjoy a successful career at stud.

Canford Cliffs won the Lockinge Stakes. He was trained by Richard Hannon. Canford won three successive Group 1s, the Irish 2,000 Guineas, St James's Palace Stake and the Sussex St.akes during his three-year-old campaign. In the Queen Anne Stables, he was beaten by Frankel.

Frankel won the Lockinge Stakes in 2010. He won 14 times from as many starts, 10 of them in Group 1 company. Frankel's six-length rout of the 2,000 Guineas field of 2011 remains one of most remarkable performances in the history of racing. Excelebration finished second to Franke on four occasions, including in 2012 Lockede. He was retired after landing the Champion Stake at Ascot. The son of Galileo won at age three. His stablemate Bullet Train was his pacemaker.

Ribchester won four Group 1 races and finished placed in several others. He won the 2017 Lockinge with a three-and-a-half-length victory from Lightning Spear. He was retired after finishing fifth in the Breeder's Cup Mile. Frankel, Canford Cliffs, Hawk Wing, Paco Boy, and Can't Buy a Horse were also trained by Richard Fahey.
