Tridents tie up Scorpions in men’s rugby

After their last hard-fought meeting earlier in April, when the Scorpions RFC managed to hold off the Tridents RFC, the spectators knew they were in for some fast-paced and intense action. And the Tridents did not let them down, scoring a try and a conversion within the first 30 seconds of the match on Saturday, April 22, at the Historic Garrison Savannah.

Scorpions responded quickly though, with big man Raj Edwards powering through to touch it down. Unfortunately, Kevin Carter’s kick was unsuccessful, leaving the score at 7-5 in favour of the underdog Tridents.

The action was end to end, and Simon John put the Scorpions ahead with a try, while Carter’s conversion attempt failed. Undeterred, Tridents Shane Howard scored a try, but Deandre Phillips's kick was unsuccessful.

Tridents Dimitri Gill and Shane Howard combined to put another seven points on the board before half-time. The score at intermission was 19-10 to the Tridents.

Early action in the second half saw Simon John add another try before Scorpions fought back with another try from Daniel Ramsay and a successful conversion from Kevin Carter. Despite intense attacking play from Tridents, Scorpions were able to tie it up with a Sean Ward try and Carter kick.

Close to full-time, Williams got a yellow card after a heated interaction with his opponents, leaving the Tridents short-handed. However, this made no difference, and the final score was a 24-24 draw.

This was certainly one of the most intense and entertaining fixtures of the year!

The Women’s XV’s League launches on Saturday, April 29, with kick-off scheduled for 3:30 pm.
