Two-time NBA MVP has knee surgery; FIBA World Cup status in doubt (report)

One of the league’s most dominant players may miss out on the chance to represent his country in the upcoming FIBA Basketball World Cup.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reports that Giannis Antetokounmpo “underwent a cleanup procedure on his knee two weeks ago.” Charania adds that the Milwaukee Bucks star’s chances of representing Greece in the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup are now “uncertain.”

The 28-year-old Antetokounmpo is a seven-time All-NBA selection and won back-to-back MVP awards in 2019 and 2020. The 7-foot-0 forward possesses a unique combination of size and athleticism that has the potential to make Greece a dangerous team in the upcoming FIBA World Cup. Charania did not make note of whether the procedure would affect Antetokounmpo’s status with the Bucks heading into the 2023-24 season.

Antetokounmpo’s Bucks are coming off a disappointing finish to the 2022-23 season. The East’s No. 1 seed was bounced from the playoffs early by an upstart Miami Heat team, leading to Milwaukee (and Antetokounmpo) facing a huge wave of criticism.
