His younger brother, Ryan Leonard, was selected eighth overall in this year’s NHL draft by the Washington Capitals. He’ll play at Boston College this year.

Before being drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, John Leonard played three seasons at UMass, scoring 56 goals with 49 assists in 106 total games. He also played at Springfield Cathedral High School.

The 24-year-old skipped his senior year at UMass to sign with San Jose.

John Leonard spent a majority of the 2022-23 NHL season with the Milwaukee Admirals — Nashville’s AHL affiliate — and tallied 17 goals and 27 assists in 67 games. He was traded — along with the Sharks’ 2023 third-round draft pick — to the Predators in July 2022 for Luke Kunin.
