USC vs San Jose State 8/26/23

The San Jose State Spartans visit Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in Los Angeles, California on Saturday August 26 to play the USC Trojans in the opening game of the college football regular season for both teams. Last season, San Jose State was 7-5 overall and 5-3 in the Mountain West Conference. Running back Kairee Robinson returns for San Jose State after last season scoring 10 touchdowns on the ground, while Justin Lockhart, who was the second leading receiver, is also back. On defense, San Jose State has plenty of question marks as they lost three top defensive players which leaves huge holes to fill. San Jose State has a tough non-conference schedule but if the defense is able to answer the doubts most have, the Spartans could battle for a conference title.

The USC (2022 - 11-3, 8-1 Pac-12) offense will be led once again by the highly talented Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Caleb Williams. Last season Williams led the nation in passing touchdowns with 42 and although new faces will surround him at the skills positions, expect Williams to dominate most defenses he faces. Marshawn Lloyd, who transferred from South Carolina is likely to be the lead tailback. Tight end Duce Robinson will be one of Williams’ favorite targets while Dorian Singer, who transferred from Arizona, will be the No. 1 wideout.

A few question marks remain for USC on defense but transfers Bear Alexander and Mason Cobb give strength to the front four and linebacker corps respectively. Last season USC led the nation in turnover margin with a plus-22, thanks to 29 takeaways but must improve from eighth worst in yards allowed per play and 94th in scoring defense. Safety Calen Bullock and linebacker Eric Gentry both return to give the defense talent and experience. 

USC will pick up a double digit victory on Saturday when hosting San Jose State, but the play here is OVER. The OVER has cashed in four of San Jose State's last 6 and in each of USC's last eight. Both San Jose State and USC have talented quarterbacks and San Jose State will use its passing game to score a touchdown or two against an unproven rebuilt USC defense, while the Trojans will move up and down the field at ease against San Jose and score plenty of points.
